Local fans probably have seen this Wapakoneta man on the basketball court a hundred times. But most have probably never noticed him. He’s the proverbial unsung hero of high school sports.
His tools? A whistle and a striped shirt.
He is the referee.
Meet Steve Trout. Today he is the newest member of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame and resident of Wapakoneta. Steve has been officiating basketball for more than 35 years.

COLDWATER — For 15 years as head coach of the Wapakoneta ACME team, Willie Sammetinger had never seen his team make the state tournament.
Willie Sammetinger is a patient man.
The long wait came to an end Monday, as the Redskins blasted by Coldwater in their own back yard with an 8-0 win in the district final.
“We were close last year,” Sammetinger said after the game. “We came within one run. This year they kicked the door down and ran right through it.”

MINSTER – Both of Auglaize County’s remaining teams in the ACME district tournament overcame dicey early innings to pick up wins on Monday night at Hanover Street Park and set up a match-up tonight.
Minster fell behind by four runs early before scoring 14 unanswered runs in a 14-4 run-rule win over Anna while Auglaize County sectional champ Wapakoneta escaped from a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning with a double play and went on to defeat Fort Loramie 9-2 in the nightcap.
Minster and Wapakoneta will play tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Minster.
ROCKFORD — The Wapakoneta Junior ACME team opened district play with a 6-2 win over St. Henry Monday.
Wapakoneta broke open the scoring in the top of the first when Logan Martin drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Quinn Lotridge singled and got caught in an intentional rundown between first and second, allowing Martin to score.
Jarrett Koch and Martin put together successive RBI doubles in the third inning to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Wapakoneta Redskins Junior ACME sophomore pitcher Quinn Lotridge overcame a 5-run second inning as his teammates rallied to beat the Coldwater Cavaliers Junior ACME team 11-7 Sunday night in Rockford.
Staked to a 2-0 lead when sophomore first baseman Kodi Morgan scored on a passed ball after he was walked and moved to second on a single by sophomore third baseman Jon Eaton and a walk to left fielder Taylor Gonzales. Eaton scored on a groundout by second baseman Alex Rasche.

The Wapakoneta Redskins Junior ACME team fell to the Crestview Knights for the second time in four days.
After falling 11-8 Tuesday in an error-filled game behind the pitching of sophomore pitchers Jon Eaton and Keaton Metz — the error bug struck again and in the same inning, the fifth.
Trailing 4-1 after surrending four unearned runs in the top of the second, the Redskins rallied in the bottom of the third to tie the score.
MINSTER — Wapakoneta strolled through most of the Auglaize County sectional ACME baseball tournament without using its best available pitcher.
When top-seeded Wapak finally pulled its ace out of the back pocket, Chace Culver was unhittable.
Culver threw five no-hit innings and reliever Dominic Campos finished off the shutout with two scoreless innings as Wapakoneta wrapped up the Auglaize County sectional ACME title with a 7-0 win over Minster on Friday night.

MINSTER — The Wapakoneta Redskins ACME baseball team put together enough key hits at the right time Sunday afternoon the top-seeded Redskins opened the 2012 Auglaize County ACME sectional tournament with a 5-0 victory over New Bremen.
“Brandon Miller did a good job and only had to throw about 85 pitches,” Wapakoneta ACME head coach Willie Sammetinger said. “After the first inning you could tell he was in command.”
