LIMA — The waters could only be held back for so long.
Then the dam finally gave way and the wave came crashing down.
Underdogs all season long, the Wapakoneta Redskins made a run at an upset Friday night only to watch the Elida Bulldogs make their own run to pull out a 51-39 win in a Division II sectional final at Lima Senior High School.
COLUMBUS — A pin here, a pin there.
Eventually they piled up.
After a strong start, the Wapakoneta Redskins faltered and finished seventh at the state boys bowling tournament Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
The Coldwater Cavaliers, who Wapak edged in last week’s district tournament and in the regular season standings, knocked off Springfield Kenton Ridge for the state title.
COLUMBUS — Wapakoneta Redskins junior J.T. Martin’s dream of a state championship vanished on Day One.
Goal No. 2, to place, disappeared on Day Two.
Martin came up short in his bid to become the third state wrestling champion and was bumped out of the top eight on Friday.
The 106-pounder opened on Thursday with a loss to Eaton freshman Michael May, the No. 2 seed out of the Goshen district, on a pin at the 5:40 mark.
