BASKETBALL: Rangers rally past Botkins

December 14, 2011

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans made a fight of it but came up short at home for the second night in a row.

The New Knoxville Rangers used a strong fourth quarter to put the Trojans away, 50-38, in a varsity girls basketball game Tuesday at Botkins High School.

“It was an ugly game,” Rangers varsity coach Tim Hegemier said. “I was really disappointed in our defense and the offense, but you are going to have those games.”

BASKETBALL: Cards clip Trojans

December 13, 2011

BOTKINS — New Bremen sophomore Julie Brown’s jumper with five seconds left allowed the Cardinals to defeat the Botkins Trojans 50-48 on Monday night.

It was a tight battle throughout the game with the lead changing hands often, but the clean jumper off a turnover by Brown gave New Bremen its first road win of the season.

“We needed this win,” Cardinals varsity coach Randy Eckert said. “It was one of those games that they got a lead and we got a lead and it went back and forth and we were just fortunate to win it at the end.”

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys bowling team took over the top spot in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference standings after winning on Saturday at its home alley at Astro Lanes.

Wapak pushed its record to 4-0 with a 3,021-2,318 win over the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds.

BASKETBALL: Ada outshoots Wapak

December 12, 2011

Typically, a 60-percent shooting night would be cause for celebration.

Typically.

But when your opponent shoots 67 percent and knocks down 14 three-pointers, well, that makes the climbing a little tough.

The Wapakoneta Redskins found out just how tough in a 70-55 loss to the Ada Bulldogs in a varsity boys basketball game Friday night at Wapakoneta High School.

Ada was playing in its first game of the season. But the Bulldogs didn’t look like it, shooting 24-of-36 (67 percent) overall from the floor and 14-of-21 (67 percent) from three-point range.

BASKETBALL: W-G gives New Knoxville scare

December 12, 2011

NEW KNOXVILLE — For most of the first half the New Knoxville Rangers basketball team controlled the action against the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers Friday night as they doubled the score on the Tigers 28-13 at halftime.

In the second half the Tigers caught fire and pulled within 10 at the end of the third. They closed the gap to two points a couple times in the fourth quarter, but the Rangers hit a few free throws down the stretch to defeat the Tigers 50-44 at the Barn in New Knoxville.

BASKETBALL: Wapak 'Nics' Kenton

December 9, 2011

A trifecta of treys in a 73-second stretch in the fourth quarter gave the Wapakoneta Redskins the lead and staked them to 7-point advantage they never relinquished in a battle Thursday against the Kenton Wildcats in their Western Buckeye League opener.

Redskin junior guard Nicole Brown hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to give Wapakoneta a 50-49 lead at the 5:09 mark in the fourth quarter in a see-saw affair and then put the dagger in Kenton’s comeback hopes with a second trey at the 4:36 mark and a third with 3:56 left in the quarter putting the Redskins up 56-49.

BASKETBALL: Patton passes 1,000 as Tigers pound Perry

December 9, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — Waynesfield-Goshen junior Kaylee Patton needed 16 points Thursday night to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in her varsity girls basketball career.

And she needed less than two quarters to do it.

Patton passed the mark with a reverse layup with 1:37 left in the half, then went on to score a team-high 24 points to lead the Tigers to a 56-40 win over the Perry Commodores in the Northwest Central Conference opener for both teams.

“It’s amazing,” Kaylee Patton said. “My teammates really help me out. They hit some outside shots and that let me get to the inside.”

BASKETBALL: Improved 'Skins to host Ada

December 8, 2011

At first glance, the opening weekend of the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball season looks a lot like the opening weekend a year ago — a win over a not-so-good Piqua team on Friday followed by a loss to a very good Fort Recovery squad on Saturday.

At first glance.

To anyone who was actually paying attention, however, this is not the same Redskins team.

With as many as four sophomores starting at times and with Alex Greve sidelined by an injury, the 2010-2011 Wapak team went on to lose 11 of its next 12 games.
