The Defiance Bulldogs defeated the Wapakoneta Redskins 200-219 in a key Western Buckeye League girls golf match Monday at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Both teams struggled. But Defiance struggled less as it pulled out the win.
â€śEverybody seemed kind of sluggish,â€ť Wapak coach Dawn West said. â€śWe were just one step behind all day.â€ť
Shelby Kohler carded a 46 to lead the Redskins and earn medalist honors.
â€śShelby played really well,â€ť West said. â€śShe had the opportunity to shoot even lower.â€ť
Courtney Knippen shot a 56, followed by Bryly Beaman with a 57 and Hannah smith with a 60.
The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team was unable to take advantage of its home course advantage as it suffered a two-stroke loss to the Elida Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League dual match Monday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
Elida defeated the Redskins 175-177.
â€śWhen you play at home, you have to win at home to have a chance at the WBL title,â€ť Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. â€śI tell the kids every stroke counts in a golf match. We can never assume we are out of a match. We have to always grind it out and play smart golf.
Waynesfield-Goshen product Joe Horn saw his first game action for the Indianapolis Colts in a 16-3 exhibition loss to the Washington Redskins on Friday at Indianapolis.
With 3:11 left in the game, Horn caught a 12-yard pass to the left from Dan Orlovsky. He picked up a first down on the play. But the Colts were unable to move the chains again in what would be their final possession of the game.
Horn missed the Coltsâ€™ first exhibition game with an injury.
The Wapakoneta athletic department will be recognizing the 1986 WBL Championship football team, coaches and cheerleaders before the Wapakoneta vs. Bellefontaine football game on Friday. Honorees and their families are invited to attend a social gathering at the Middle School cafeteria at 5:30 p.m., a tour of the building at 6, and the recognition at 7.

The Redskins varsity girls golf team finished third in a tri-match against Bellefontaine and Perrysburg at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Perrysburg won the event with a scored of 175. Bellefontaine posted a 197. And Wapak turned in a 209.
Bellefontaineâ€™s Jascey Vermillion carded a 41 to take medalist honors.
â€śWe played pretty good tonight,â€ť Wapak coach Dawn West said. â€śThe golf course has changed in the last week to being very fast and hard, so our girls did a nice job of adapting to the condition change that they are not accustomed to.â€ť
LIMA - Wapakâ€™s varsity girls tennis team swept the Lima Senior Spartans 5-0 at Lima Senior.
Annie Harrod blanked Lima Seniorâ€™s Alexis Smith 6-0, 6-0 in first singles.
The Spartans were forced to forfeit in second and third singles.
In first doubles, the Redskinsâ€™ Katie Martin and Kirsten Wellons shut out Erica Schlesselman and Brooklyn Mason 6-0, 6-0.
Wapakâ€™s Chloe Veit and Carly Buzzard routed Ryan Crockett and Amelia Upthegrove 6-0, 6-2 in second doubles.
The win lifts Wapak to 3-0 on the young season.
The Redskins next match is Monday afternoon at 4:30 at WBL foe Elida.
CELINA â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team finished 17th at the 24-team Celina Invitational on Friday at Foxâ€™s Den in Celina.
The inexperienced Wapak squad turned in a team score of 344 but was just a few strokes from finishing in the top half of the pack.
SIDNEY â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls tennis team picked up its second win in as many matches with a 4-1 win over the Sidney Yellow Jackets on Thursday in Sidney.
In first singles, Wapak senior Makenzie Klock rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Kassi Edwards.
Redskins senior Shelby Gillespie topped Monica Kislig 7-6, 6-3 in second singles.
Junior Annie Harrod rounded out a sweep of the singles matches for Wapak with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Katie Salyers.
The Redskins also won in first doubles as junior Katie Martin and freshman Kirsten Wellons pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win.
WAYNESFIELD â€” The New Knoxville Rangers boys golf team defeated the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, 185-200, in a dual match opening win for the Rangers on Thursday at Prairie View Golf Course in Waynesfield.
W-G senior Justus Ball was the match medalist with a 41.
Garret Hopenstein shot a 46 for the Tigers. Eric Shaner recorded a 55 and Ryan Agnew turned in a 58 to round out the scoring for the all-senior Tigers squad.
Tyler Shreve led the way for New Knoxville with a 42.
Justin Slaven shot a 45, David Boesche added a 48 and Michael Porter carded a 50 for the winning Rangers.
The Wapakoneta Redskins junior varsity boys golf team traveled to Arrowhead for a JV quad match with Minster, New Bremen and Marion Local.
"For being the first match of the season for the JV's, we played well," Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. "I thought we really did a nice job competing with the other teams."
The Redskins shot a team total of 192 and placed 3rd out of four teams. New Bremen won with a 178, followed by Minster 185, Wapak 192, and Marion Local 219.
