July 29th
CHICAGO — Every day presents a new challenge for Ohio State interim coach Luke Fickell.
Thursday’s big surprise was facing a swarm of media members — he was expecting just to give a speech at a luncheon. After all, this was his first time here.
But questions keep coming and he had to react.
July 28th
It turns out this isn’t the first time the Colts have expressed interest in Joe Horn.
It is, however, the first time Joe Horn has accepted their offer.
“Funny story — the Baltimore Colts invited my grandpa Joe (Horn) to training camp back in the ’60s,” the younger Joe Horn said Wednesday from the now Indianapolis Colts practice facility in Indianapolis. “But he decided not to go.”
The younger Joe Horn wasn’t about to do that when the Colts contacted his agent on Tuesday and offered him a free agent contract.
July 27th
Ah, the traditional sounds of summer.
The “whap” of a ball smacking a mitt coming from the baseball diamond.
The squeals of delight emanating from the WaterPark.
And the barking of football coaches echoing through Harmon Field.
Wait, what?
In the era of year-round sports, 7-on-7 football scrimmages in July have become a necessary evil to anyone who wants to still be playing in November.
“Whether I like it or not — because I came from a couple different eras here — it has become very important,” Wapakoneta Redskins coach Doug Frye said after a 7-on-7 Saturday.
July 26th
ALLENTOWN — California native Randy Hannagan became the eighth different winner of the Engine Pro NRA Sprint Invader’s Run for the Rabbit on Friday night at Limaland Motorsports Park.
The event honors the late Limaland Motorsports Park racer Travis “Rabbit” Miller.
Hannagan entered the 25-lap feature as the NRA point’s leader with two wins including last Saturday night at Eldora Speedway. He started on the front row, alongside J.R. Stewart, and led flag-to-flag for the win.
July 25th
Practice dates have been set for the Wapakoneta Redskins football teams.
Junior High football practice starts Monday, Aug. 1. Players are to meet at the Middle School at 3:30 p.m. If you have any questions call Tom Hunter at (419) 738-8292.
Freshman practice also starts Monday, Aug. 1. Players should meet near the weight room at 10:30 a.m. Any questions, contact Adam Friemering at friead@wapak.org.
July 22nd
The NCAA has told Ohio State that it won’t face the most severe charges possible in the memorabilia-for-cash and tattoos scandal that cost football coach Jim Tressel his job.
Investigators said they found no evidence that Ohio State failed to properly monitor its football program or any evidence of a lack of institutional control, according to a letter sent to the university and released Friday.
NCAA investigators also said they have not found any new violations.

GARDNER, Kan. (AP) — High school football coaches are always eager for fall practice to start, and that rings especially true in small towns all across the Midwest, where every store closes up and every light is turned off except for those at the stadium on a Friday night.
Some coaches are even more anxious to get started this season.
Take a quick perusal of the top of the time sheets from the 13-14 and 15-over age divisions at the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships last weekend at Wapakoneta WaterPark and you’re likely to see some familiar names.
You will also see some names that you will likely be hearing a lot in the near future.
Fans of Wapakoneta swimming should be used to hearing names such as Fleagle and Kantner.
Now they can add Miller, Sammons and Sutton to that list.
July 21st
The Wapakoneta Waves 11-12 year-olds left their mark on the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships last weekend at Wapakoneta WaterPark.
They were the Waves’ only age division to take top honors in both the boys and girls standings.
The 11-12 girls dominated, scoring 393 points to just 278 for the second-place Sherwood Sharks. Nine different girls medaled with four of them garnering four or more medals.
In fact, the 11-12 girls accounted for 17 percent of the combined team score for the Waves. They score more points than any other age division for the Waves.
July 20th
For some of the youngest members of the Wapakoneta Waves swimming team, the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships over the past weekend were their first taste of a major competition.
And they didn’t disappoint.
Wapak finished second overall in the competition to perennial power Westside Wave.
By individual age group, the 8-under boys placed fourth and the 9-10 boys took second. The girls were seventh in the 8-under and fourth in 9-10.
Beating a path to the medal stand on Friday and Saturday were Justin Fleagle and Nate Metzger as both won five medals over the two-day meet.
