Donny Schatz and Tyler Walker came away with the big hardware after the World of Outlaws Sprint Series trip into Northwest Ohio.
Schatz pulled out the win in the Brad Doty Classic on Wednesday at Limaland Motorsports Park in Allentown, and Walker took advantage of Sammy Swindell’s last-turn misfortune to claim the $50,000 winner’s purse in the Kings Royal on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg.
The Wapakoneta Waves finished second to powerhouse Westside at the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships on Saturday at Wapakoneta Waterpark.
Westside entered the second day of the competition with a narrow lead over Wapak and stretched that lead to take the title by a 2,503-2,296.5 margin.
The Sherwood Sharks were third with 2,102.5 points.
Josh Fleagle had a big day for the Waves in the 15-over division.
He snapped his own meet record in the 100-meter freestyle, posting a time of 50.69. He then established another meet record with a 30.14 in the 50 breaststroke.
ST. HENRY — Minster starting pitcher Austin Knapke had no tomorrow in the best-of-three series to decide a district ACME champion.
Knapke’s pitching and some timely hits have Minster in prime position for a state berth.
Ryan Hoying hit a two-run home run and Knapke frustrated Cavalier batters for six innings in the Wildcats’ 3-1 win over Coldwater in the first game of the ACME district championship series on Thursday night.
Knapke, along younger brother Andrew who started at second base on Thursday, are unavailable for tonight’s action because of a family wedding.
COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio State’s players say they are resigned to make the best of the school’s self-imposed penalties, no matter how hurt or angry some may feel.
“There’s nothing we can really do about that,” offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts said after a conditioning workout this week. “The university decided to make that call. We’ve got to accept it.”
ST. HENRY — For four innings Tuesday night, Wapakoneta pitcher Brandon Miller was virtually flawless.
Unfortunately for Wapak, Minster ended that in a big way in the fifth inning.
Minster pounded out five straight hits to erase a 2-0 deficit and pull out a 3-2 win in the ACME baseball Auglaize County district final at the Wally Post Athletic Complex in St. Henry.
Wapak ended its season with a 20-4 record.
Miller had held Minster to just one hit and one walk through the first four innings.
But Minster had him figured out in the fifth.
ST. HENRY — Wapakoneta and Van Wert will try again tonight.
After three lightning delays and the threat of ever-intensifying lightning, the decision was made just before 10 to suspend the loser’s bracket final of the ACME baseball district tournament Monday night at the Wally Post Athletic Complex in St. Henry.
The game will resume tonight at 6 with the scored tied 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning. Wapak has runners on second and third with two outs.
ALLENTOWN — NASCAR star Kasey Kahne is among the drivers scheduled to drive in the 23rd annual Brad Doty Classic World of Outlaws Sprint Series race on Wednesday at Limaland Motorsports Park.
Kahne is a car owner in the Outlaws series.
Steve Kinser, a 20-time WoO champion and two-time Doty Classic winner, is also expected to compete. Kinser is off to a strong start in 2011 and is one of the favorites in this year’s race.
ST. HENRY — Wapakoneta stayed alive in the ACME baseball district tournament on Sunday with a win over Delphos St. John’s a day after falling behind early and losing to Van Wert 10-8 on Saturday at St. Henry.
Van Wert and Wapakoneta will meet again in an elimination game tonight at 7 at the Wally Post Athletic Center in St. Henry. The winner of that game will face Minster.
