FOOTBALL NOTES: Merricle comeback

If you think you’ve been hearing the name Jensen Merricle more the final three weeks of the season, you’re right.

After being benched earlier in the season, the Wapakoneta Redskins junior running back has returned to the lineup and become a significant contributor down the stretch.

After carrying the ball just four times in the previous four games, Merricle broke out in Week 8, rushing for 71 yards and a touchdown in six carries in the win over Van Wert.

FOOTBALL: Chiefs win JBL Super Bowl

The Wapakoneta Chiefs ended the season with a perfect 8-0 record and the coveted Junior Buckeye League Super Bowl championship trophy.

The Chiefs earned the right to be called champions by defeating the Upper Scioto Valley Rams, 34-22 Sunday at Harmon Field.

The Chiefs entered the contest with a 6-0 overall record and 38 points, while the Rams also sat at 6-0 but with 40 points.

The Chiefs conquered the Rams with a strong running game and a healthy passing attack.

FOOTBALL: W-G's Spencer named coach of the year

WAYNESFIELD - Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity football coach Gary Spencer was named the Northwest Central Conference coach of the year and senior linebacker Ron Jarvis was named the co-defensive player of the year when the all-league selections were released Thursday afternoon.

First-team offensive selections included junior quarterback Garret Miller, senior center Eric Glover, senior guard Ron Jarvis, sophomore tackle Gabe Wilcox, junior tight end Lee Turner, and junior running back Gabe Hennon.
