CROSS COUNTRY: Wapak, Botkins place in league meets

KENTON — Both the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys and girls cross country teams finished seventh overall in the Western Buckeye League meet Saturday at the Hardin County Fairgrounds in Kenton.
Wapak’s top boys finisher was senior Caleb Hennon, who placed 17th individually with a time of 18:08.
Freshman Hayden Brandenhoff finished 36th with a 19:03.
Rounding out the Wapak top seven were sophomore Sam Harrod (52nd, 19:29), freshman Sam Bowers (57th, 19:43), junior John Martin (58th, 19:44), sophomore Billy Butler (64th, 20:03) and junior Ryan O’Neil (69th, 20:16).

FOOTBALL: Wapak routs Van Wert

VAN WERT — It wasn’t the greatest of starts.
Fortunately for the Wapakoneta Redskins, the Van Wert Cougars aren’t the greatest of football teams.
Wapak fumbled the ball away on two if its first three plays but bounced back and dominated in a 77-12 shellacking of the Cougars in a Western Buckeye League game Friday night at Eggerss Stadium in Van Wert.
The Redskins’ 77 points eclipsed the previous single-game scoring record of 62 points set in a win over Perry in 1967.
The Redskins remained unbeaten on the season at 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the WBL. Van Wert is 0-8, 0-7.

FOOTBALL: Tigers take advantage of USV turnovers

WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers bounced back from a tough Week 7 loss to knock off the rival Upper Scioto Valley Rams 46-21 on Friday night in Waynesfield.
W-G used a strong defensive effort to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the Northwest Central Conference.
The Tigers defense was lead by sophomore Gabe Wilcox, who had two interceptions with 72 return yards and one touchdown.
“He is a special player and I am looking forward to watch him do some more spectacular things in the next two years,” W-G coach Gary Spencer said.

BOYS SOCCER: Wapak blanks Kenton

After missing half of his senior season with a knee injury, Wapakoneta Redskins’ Colin Mankin was eager to get back on the pitch for Seniors Night.
It only took him 27 second to reacclimate himself.
Mankin’s heel-kick goal in the opening minute proved to be the only offense the Redskins would need as they rolled to a 5-0 shutout win over the Kenton Wildcats in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer match Thursday at Ryan Field.

BOYS GOLF: Acheson falls at district

FINDLAY — Wapakoneta Redskins junior Caleb Acheson saw his golf season come to an end at the Division I district tournament Thursday at Red Hawk in Findlay.
Acheson shot an 80 for the round and tied for 14th place out of 60 golfers.
“It’s not bad considering the it’s only the second time playing the course and first time in tournament conditions,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said.
Acheson started with a par, bogey, par, then pulled his drive into the heather on No. 4. It took him two hits to get out and he ended up with a double bogey.

VOLLEYBALL: 'Skins win at Kenton

KENTON — The Wapakoneta Redskins defeated the Kenton Wildcats in three games in a Western Buckeye League varsity volleyball match Thursday at Kenton.
Senior hitter Morgan Quellhorst had 16 kills to lead the Redskins. Junior setter Nicole Brown had 38 assists.
Junior libero Amber Dickerson had 16 digs.
Wapak finished the season 13-8 overall and 6-3 in the WBL.
The Redskins open tournament play against the Bath Wildcats at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Lima Senior.

FOOTBALL: Van Wert next up for Redskins

The Wapakoneta Redskins are heading into Friday night’s Western Buckeye League varsity football matchup at Van Wert with a full head of steam.
The Cougars, well, aren’t.
It’s 7-0 vs. 0-7.
Wapak is coming off convincing wins over Ottawa-Glandorf and rival St. Marys and seems to be getting stronger every game.
Van Wert, meanwhile, is in a downward spiral that has only worsened since a 28-18 loss to the previously winless Celina Bulldogs in Week 6. Last week the Cougars were blanked 46-0 by the Defiance Bulldogs.

GIRLS GOLF: Kohler bows out of district tourney

NORWALK — Wapakoneta Redskins sophomore Shelby Kohler bowed out of the Division I district girls golf tournament held Wednesday at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk.
Kohler was the first girls golfer in school history to qualify for the district tournament.
St. Ursula and Ashland advanced to state in the team competition. And individuals from Perrysburg and Notre Dame punched their tickets to state by shooting 83 and 86.

VOLLEYBALL: Wapak whips Shawnee

With postseason play right around the corner, Wapakoneta Redskins varsity volleyball coach Keith Rambin wanted to send a message.
Mission accomplished.
After a bit of a slow start, the Redskins recovered and rolled to a dominating 25-22, 25-14, 25-16 win over the Shawnee Indians on Tuesday at Wapakoneta High School.
Down 11-7 after committing several errors in the first game, Wapak rallied with seven straight points to take a 14-11 lead and never looked back.

PREP ROUNDUP: Botkins girls second at Anna

ANNA — The Botkins Trojans varsity girls cross country team continued its successful season with a second-place finish at the 14-team Anna Rocket Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Shelbie Bailey led the way for the Trojans, finishing 12th overall with a time of 20:49.
Rounding out the top seven for Botkins were Brittany Bailey (14-20:59), Liz Knoop (17th-21:05), Bethany Christman (32-22:00), Elleah Cooper (41-22:14), Jackie Smith (45-22:36) and Renee Buehler (64-23:10).
