WaterPark rates to increase

Daily and seasonal membership rates for the Wapakoneta WaterPark are going up this summer, but city administrators say this is offset by the fact the pool season also is going to be longer.

Wapakoneta City Recreation Board members approved a recommendation made by the Wapakoneta WaterPark Pool Advisory Committee to increase daily fees by $1 and the seasonal  membership fee for a family by $25.

C’ville to sell fire vehicles

CRIDERSVILLE — An area fire chief and his crew are ready to sell a truck that has been with the village for 21 years.

Cridersville Fire Chief Ron Mertz along with the Cridersville Village Council members intend to advertise the 1991 Ford pick-up truck for selling, as it is to be auctioned off.

The truck will be advertised in the Cridersville Village Hall parking lot, and it will be put up for sale in mid-March at the Springbrook Auto Auction.

Laws of Life: WHS students honored by essay contest

Three Wapakoneta High School students were honored recently as the school’s top essay writers in the Laws of Life Essay Contest.

Mutsuo Sasaki, the son of Yuko and Jim Mankin; Stephanie Bracey, the daughter of Steve Bracey and Carla Crawford; and Chastity Austin, the daughter of Scott Austin, were chosen as Wapakoneta’s best and represented the school recently at an awards banquet held at the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center in Lima.

Tourney raises money for cancer

Nearly 150 people participated Sunday in the VFW District 2 annual fundraising bowling tournament held at Astro Lanes.

Proceeds from the tournament are earmarked to help cancer patients and their families and National Military Services, which provides assistance and support to military families in need.

In all, 29 five-person teams participated in the tournament. All the teams were comprised of VFW members or its auxiliaries in District 2. The tournament included teams from Spencerville, Celina, Sidney, Lima, Wapakoneta and St. Marys.

St. Marys Board of Education talks cuts, future levy

ST. MARYS — A local board of education held a work session Saturday morning to discuss the financial state of the St. Marys City School District and the possibility of cuts and a levy in the future.

Treasurer Tom Sommer gathered financial information for the board to review in beginning its budget talks. Sommer gathered information starting from 2004, when voters passed the emergency levy. He also included the forecast that was recently approved by board members.

Grants expected to help aid recycling

Grants applied for by the Auglaize County Solid Waste District should assist with county recycling if they are awarded locally.
A community development grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) would be used to purchase needed equipment to help with county recycling efforts.

Local teen brings up gun safety to council

Unzipping his baseball equipment bag in the Wapakoneta City Council chambers, a local teen pulls out a handgun and an assault rifle.
Councilors did not panic. The youth then explained a new hobby centered on airsoft guns. The replica guns have the weight, look and feel of an actual weapon.
The Wapakoneta High School eighth-grader stressed to councilors the need to develop a policy to ensure the welfare of the youngsters possessing these guns and the well-being of the city’s police officers.

Ohio recognizes congenital heart defect awareness week

Four local families from Wapakoneta are ecstatic regarding a recent proclamation signed this week by Gov. John Kasich.
The week of Feb. 7-14 is to be designated as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week in Ohio — as Kasich signed the document this month.
Kasich noted thousands of children are born with birth defects every year, including approximately 40,000 children in the U.S. who begin life with one or more than 35 identified forms of congenital heart defects.

Sewer action: Brown proposes help for CSO elimination

With Wapakoneta facing costly sewer upgrades, the Clean Water Affordability Act introduced Thursday by a U.S. legislator could provide some relief for the city and the city’s utility consumers.

A Wapakoneta administrator would support the measure if it provided such relief to the city which acted proactively and whose residents keep the city solvent.
