A speech therapist and six new teachers were hired by the Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education this week.
Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner said the new hires fill in as-needed based on retirements and reassignments.
Whitney Fries is to serve as a speech therapist for the district. Details of her contract were not available. She takes the place of Deb Madden, who recently retired as a speech pathologist at Wapakoneta Elementary School after 38 years.
It is that time of year where family and friends come together, celebrate the holiday and enjoy an annual festival.
The St. Joe Fourth of July Festival kicks off Tuesday and Wednesday at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds, and festival chairs are putting the final touches on the event.
“Our mission of the festival is family and patriotism,” St. Joe Festival Chair Mike Wurst said. “It’s a family-oriented event.”
The admission, parking and attendance drawings are free, and the event is open to the public.
The Saturday edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News may be delayed due to the power outages in the area.
Concerned with the financial picture portrayed of the county, the Auglaize County auditor met Thursday with the Auglaize County commissioners to discuss her budgeting worries.
“We always try to remain so positive about the county,” Auditor Janet Schuler said. “I like that, but things aren’t as rosy as they appear just because the sales tax is up.
“Sales tax numbers are good, but they have to be because the state is yanking money away from us,” she said.
CRIDERSVILLE — Cridersville Village Council Safety Committee members discussed Thursday the possibility of adding legislation to continue to label pit bulls as potentially dangerous.
Cridersville Police Chief John Drake presented an ordinance from the city of St. Marys and recommended the village adopt a comparable ordinance to help protect the village.
Twenty-seven years after she first began teaching the public about health-related topics, Auglaize County’s health education director says she is ready for something else.
Janet Bassitt didn’t intend to find herself in the health field after studying home economics education, but after three years doing such work with the Ohio State University Extension Agency and handling special litter and recycling projects in a 33-county area, funding for her position there expired and she applied at the Auglaize County Health Department.
In the next five weeks, a Wapakoneta city official intends to have determined a location for a new dog park.
But construction of the park could take longer, unless a local Boy Scout, volunteers and donors come forward to hasten its development since the city’s Parks and Recreation Fund is strapped.
Wapakoneta 1st Ward Councilor Jim Neumeier presented his findings after touring nearby dog parks as well as possible city land to locate a dog park to a group of 15 people attending Wednesday’s Parks and Recreation Committee meeting.
Owning a pet since this 15-year-old Boy Scout can remember, he pondered expanding an existing dog kennel run before deciding on helping to build a new dog park.
When Wapakoneta City Council members received inquiries about converting some city-owned land into a dog park, Wapakoneta resident Travis Rohrbach said he immediately thought he could help.
One 29-year member of Wapakoneta City Schools administrative staff parted ways with the district and two others announced plans to retire this week.
Wapakoneta Middle School Principal Ray Payne was recognized for 29 years of service by Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members during a regular monthly meeting Tuesday.
“You have been compassionate about kids and passionate about school improvement,” Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner said.
Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members decided to move in a different direction with rentals of the Performing Arts Center (PAC).
Board members voted during Tuesday’s meeting to establish reimbursement rates for workers at events held at the PAC. The rates would be charged on an as-needed basis with $125 going toward each a site coordinator and lights and sound person and $50 for a student assistant. Additional fees could be charged for utilities and janitorial services as needed.
