Zimmerman laid to rest

NEW HAMPSHIRE — An overcast sky with drizzles of rain on a chilly Saturday greeted approximately 500 people turn out for the service at Waynesfield-Goshen High School. Approximately 1,500 gathered at U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman’s final resting place at Walnut Hill Cemetery near New Hampshire.
Zimmerman was killed in action July 16 in Afghanistan while on mounted patrol by a rocket propelled grenade.

QRM exec: Full inquiry would show firm’s spill total lower

An area cement company executive contends fewer than 30 gallons and closer to 8 gallons of diesel fuel entered the city’s sewer system and the Auglaize River and he hopes the authorities conduct a thorough investigation which he believes will show other contributing factors to diesel fuel found in the river.

Tied to teaching: Diane Dillman Elshire leaves her mark on students

A  retired English teacher who spent 39 years teaching at Wapakoneta City Schools said she felt a calling to teach.

“I knew I wanted to be an English teacher since I was in the eighth grade,” said Diane Dillman Elshire, who retired at the end of the school year. “It was always my favorite subject.”

Flagman visits W'field to help with Zimmerman memorial

WAYNESFIELD — Many people know him simply as the “Flag Man.”

Larry Eckhardt, of Little York, Ill., has spent the last seven years traveling from town to town across the United States helping people honor their fallen soldiers. 

Eckhardt was in the village of Waynesfield Friday with 2,380 flags to place along the path from Waynesfield-Goshen High School where the viewing for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman was held Friday and services are to be held today at 11 a.m.

Breastfeeding Week starts with mobile unit at fair

A mobile breastfeeding unit is to be at the Auglaize County Fair to help promote World Breastfeeding Week, Thursday through Aug. 7.

The Ohio Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) unit is essentially a clinic on wheels with a waiting room that accommodates six clients and room for four to five staff members. The unit is to be placed at the fairgrounds Sunday through Wednesday.

Waynesfield fallen U.S. soldier makes final trip home

WAYNESFIELD — Hundreds of people turned out and lined the roadways leading into Waynesfield to pay final tribute to a fallen soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
Sonny Zimmerman, of Waynesfield, died on July 16 in Mushaka, Afghanistan, from wounds he suffered when the vehicle he was in was struck by a rocket propelled grenade.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Campbell, Ky. The unit is better known as the Band of Brothers.

Wapakoneta city legislators have opted for an executive order instead of recommending passage of legislation regarding a smoking ban at city parks.

Members of two Wapakoneta City Council committees — Health and Safety and Parks and Recreation — decided this week an ordinance regarding a ban on smoking at all city parks is unnecessary as long as signs are posted telling people to refrain from the activity, Councilor-at-large Randy Fisher told the Wapakoneta Daily News on Wednesday.
