Guild debuts fall production

The Wapakoneta Theatre Guild will debut its fall play “Always A Bridesmaid” this weekend at the Eagles Aerie #691.

Opening night will be Oct. 10, followed by shows on Oct. 11 and 12. The play will continue into next weekend, with shows Oct. 17, 18 and 19.

Councilors updated on utilities

BOTKINS — A representative with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio spoke at a regular Village of Botkins council meeting  to inform locals on electric services and utility options in the area.

Special guest James Lee explained that the Public Utilities Commission is a state agency responsible for regulating the large utility companies. Council members were given a map of the electric services in the county.

Jordan targets welfare systems

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan stopped by the Wapakoneta Daily News on Monday to discuss his plans to end corporate welfare and introduce legislation that would alter the social welfare system in the U.S.

Jordan, R-Urbana, said the middle class is suffering because their tax dollars are going to bailouts for large corporations and “social safety nets” for the unemployed.

Mincemeat sale cooks up holiday memories

Mincemeat pie may not be as common of a recipe as it was the past — but Salem United Methodist Church Secretary Janet Winkler says that’s what makes it special. 

Although the main reason for the church’s annual mincemeat fundraiser is to benefit the church missions and community, Winkler said the church has continued making mincemeat itself for no other reason than tradition. 

Sister City guests have full itinerary

The Sister City delegation from Lengerich, Germany, arrives Sunday with a full itinerary of local sights to visit.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Sister City relationship.

First up will be a dedication of the Lengerich Garden at Heritage Parkway in downtown Wapakoneta. The dedication will include the installation of two plaques: one representing Wapakoneta, one representing Lengerich.

Couple wills $3.2M toward scholarships

At its annual meeting Monday night, the Wapakoneta Area Community Foundation announced the organization’s total funds rose from $2.2 million to $5.4 million within the last year thanks to a generous donation from a local couple.

Bonfire tradition continues

In celebration of Wapakoneta’s upcoming homecoming game and ceremony, the Wapakoneta Redskins plan to hold their annual bonfire and rally beginning at 7:40 p.m. Thursday at Harmon Field. 

The festivities will begin with a pep rally where the school cheerleaders and band will inspire the crowd with school spirit.

Council OKs wage hikes

Following a brief executive session for final negotiations, city councilors Monday evening accepted a contract with the Utility Workers Union of America.

The contract, which covers employees in the public works, electric, water and waste water departments, agrees to the following wage increases: 2 percent effective Aug. 1, 2014; 2 percent effective Aug. 1, 2015; and 2 percent effective Aug. 1, 2016

Sister Cities welcomes early visitors

It was reunion time Saturday morning for several members of the Wapakoneta Sister Cities organization.

Ahead of the larger sister cities delegation from Lengerich, Germany, who are touring New England and New York City this week, two couples have their own itinerary, beginning with a stop in Wapakoneta.

Drive-A-Car helps Boosters

It may not have been perfect weather for test driving a new vehicle, but that didn’t stop several people for coming out on a chilly Saturday morning in support of the Wapakoneta Athletic Boosters.

Each year the Boosters host a “Drive-A- Car” event, at which a car dealership — Wapak Ford, this year — offers to make a donation for each person that test drives a new car.
