33-year cold case finds life

ST. MARYS — A 52-year-old Florida man has been indicted in the 1981 murder of a St. Marys man in a case that remained active for decades and involved countless hours of police work.

The scientific mystery of the Star of Bethlehem, considered to the Christian faith to be the miracle which led the Magi to Jerusalem after the birth of Jesus, has inspired a Wapakoneta native’s investigation into space and history.

Aeronautical/astronautical engineer Ken Elchert, who was raised in Wapakoneta and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1967, recently released his book — “The Star: An Investigative Journey in Search of the Star of Bethlehem.”

Drifting snow blows

As wind speeds picked up Thursday afternoon and into the early hours of Friday morning, road conditions are expected to remain snow covered and hazardous.

According to Auglaize County Engineer, Doug Reinhart, the biggest problem Auglaize County will face will be the wind.

“The biggest problem we will have this afternoon and evening is the wind,” he said. “They’re predicting gusts up to 30 mph, which in west central Ohio, in the flat terrain we have, will cause drifting.”

Indictment issued In 1981 murder case

ST. MARYS — Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney Edwin A. Pierce and St. Marys Police Chief Mark announced today that Paul Hoover, 52, recently of Eustis, Fla., was presented before the Auglaize County Common Pleas Court on an indictment returned by the September 2013 term of the Auglaize County Grand Jury.

Flu season peak looms

January and February will most likely bring the peak of influenza of the year, and the most efficient way to protect yourself from catching the illness is to get the vaccine.

According to Shannon Libbey, of the Ohio Department of Health Office of Public Affairs, we have not seen the peak of activity yet.

Local gas prices lower

Wapakoneta residents who are traveling to other cities in Ohio will notice an increase in the price of gas.

That’s because gas prices in Wapakoneta have been lower than those in surrounding areas in recent weeks.

As of Wednesday, the price of gas was as low as $3.05 at the Marathon on Defiance Street. Comparatively, the lowest price for gas in Lima is $3.19, and $3.18 in St. Marys.
