Snow rollers: natural phenomena

Snow rollers, seen along Dixie Highway north of Wapakoneta, are a rare, natural phenomena, according to the National Weather Service, that require the right mix of snow, wind and cold. The snow must be icy and crunchy underfoot and falling snow cannot stick to the lower layer for them to occur.

Wendell Hampp, 91, has lived in the area since 1940 and said he has never seen anything like it.

 

Botkins joins towns lacking road salt

BOTKINS — At a regular Botkins Village Council meeting, Village Administrator Jesse Kent addressed council with concerns about the village roadways.

“County Engineer Bob Geuy said at this point there’s no more salt to be had,” Kent said. “We’re under a statewide shortage. We’re going to make do with what we have.”

If there is an urgent need for salt, Kent said the village will be able to get by. He said the village still has a sufficient supply of grit.
