Bill stops ‘illegal gambling’

State Rep. Tony Burkley, R-Payne, said the newly-signed House Bill 7 will have the consequences that were indicated all along — shutting down illegal gambling.
The Ohio House of Representatives approved House Bill 7 in March by a 66-29 vote and the move was later approved in the Senate by a 27-6 vote. Gov. John Kasich signed the bill into law May 29.

Computer class may be requirement

In an effort to better prepare Wapakoneta HIgh School students, a new graduation requirement is being proposed.
Wapakoneta High School Principal Scott Minnig recently suggested that computer applications be made a mandatory class. He said that an important skill for today’s work force is being able to use technology.
“At the high school, we like to make sure kids are prepared,” Minnig said. “What we have heard is some are lacking computer skills.”

WCS opposed to voucher system

Wapakoneta City Schools administrators and board members recently voiced opposition to a portion of a proposed state bill that would increase publicly-funded vouchers for students to attend private and parochial schools.

Street hearing slated

As the $2.6 million East Auglaize Street reconstruction project nears the midway point with infrastructure, the $2.1 West Auglaize Street reconstruction project enters the public hearing stage with a meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 10 in council chambers at the Wapakoneta City Administration Building.

Brown takes aim at China

Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown is reintroducing a bill this week which is again aimed at countering the economic harm to U.S. workers and manufacturers caused by foreign countries manipulating their currency.
The Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act of 2013 would provide consequences for countries that fail to adopt appropriate policies to eliminate practices to manipulate their currency, which artificially decreases the price on exports to the United States and increases the cost of American made goods imported by those countries.

Portman attacks child sex traffic

Children forced into sex trafficking would no longer be treated as criminals but as victims if a bill co-sponsored by Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman is passed.

Wapak man dies in crash

A 43-year-old Wapakoneta man died from injuries suffered in a three-vehicle crash near the intersection of Ohio 501 and Wapakoneta-Buckland Road, north of Wapakoneta.
Ronald Harruff was pronounced dead at the scene by Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag after the three-car crash at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
