'Athletic steers' wanted — Consumers, butchers, packers look for good color, good marbling in meat

Large animal owners of grand and reserve champions at the Auglaize County Fair received a glimpse of how their animals would be judged by packers and butchers — and ultimately the consumer. They also learned the fair judges were right on with their evaluations, according to a carcass judge’s report.

Cridersville teacher loved children

A teacher who retired after 35 years from Cridersville Elementary at the end of the school year has found a new job — caring for her first grandchild.
Vicki Bailey plans to watch 6-week-old Addison at least two days a week at her home in Marysville. When she is not there watching her granddaughter, Bailey also plans to visit her often.

Students share creative outlets — Youth art projects exhibited at fair

An explosion of color and creativity covered the walls of the Fine Arts Building at the Auglaize County Fair last week.
Student art projects, including drawings, paintings, pottery, photography and other forms of art were exhibited for members of the community to enjoy. Participating schools included students from Wapakoneta, New Knoxville, St. Marys, Waynesfield-Goshen, Cridersville and New Bremen.

Nailbenders dominate fair

Two long-time area residents, who are involved in construction and woodworking, took over as 4-H advisers for Waynesfield Nailbenders 30 years ago, just five years after the club formed.
Since Susan and Steve Sidener took over they have witnessed nothing but success for the club’s members.
When 15-year-old freshman Steve Hayes captured the top prize in woodworking at the Ohio State Fair this year, it continued that long tradition. A tradition that is so strong, that Steve Sidener admits he is starting to lose count.

Grant to update sewer facilities

A $15,780 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission is to be used to upgrade five of the county-owned sewage treatment facilities.

A West Auglaize Street woman provided Wapakoneta City Council members and city administrators with a 65-page document regarding the $2.1 million reconstruction project which includes the widening of the street from Blackhoof Street to West Pearl Street.

Circus still wows crowd

The Amazing Owen, Ozzie the Juggler, Oliver the Daredevil and the Dazzling Varenka sounds more like a group of cleverly named super heroes tasked with providing entertainment all week at the Auglaize County Fair.
In actuality they were circus performers with the Zerbini Family Circus. A large contingent of children turned out for the show and undoubtedly saw the performers as at least action heroes.
Melody Ramirez, emcee for the circus, said the circus has been in the family for more than 250 years.
