Battle over e-cigarettes hits Capitol

With one in every five Ohio deaths linked to tobacco use and the industry’s attempt to replace as many as 500,000 customers who die from tobacco-related deaths each year, an effort on Capitol Hill is being spearheaded to keep electronic cigarettes out of the hands of today’s youth and eliminate advertising aimed at children to get them to start smoking.

Ghost hunter tells of local haunts, scares area residents

In the spirit of Halloween, young and old alike anticipate hearing ghost stories.
A few visitors to the Wapakoneta library may have received more than what they bargained for.
Paranormal investigator and author John B. Kachuba gave a presentation at the Auglaize County Public Library Tuesday about “real” haunted locations. He spoke of local haunts that he has researched and locations where he has conducted paranormal investigations.
Anita Foor, of Wapakoneta, said she came to the presentation out of curiosity.

Mayor’s court to begin in W’field

WAYNESFIELD — An ordinance establishing the fine schedule for mayor’s court in Waynesfield received approval from Waynesfield Village Council members at Monday’s meeting, and Police Chief Nathan Motter said the village is ready to begin processing cases in October.

Rate increases

The cost of city trash bags is likely to increase on Jan. 1.
The fee on city utility bills is likely to increase on Jan. 1.
The extra money generated from the trash bags and the fee would be used to purchase new refuse and recycling trucks, which Wapakoneta city administrators say are needed, and to establish a vehicle replacement strategy.

Firing up the ’Skins

Volunteers key

Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) members continue to prepare for the possibility of a disaster and what might be needed.
New LEPC Secretary Don Jump said the volunteer Citizen Corps continues to work toward developing and tweaking a plan for a Volunteer Reception Center. The plan was tried out during a full-scale training exercise in June.
Jump said after that training, they are putting the final touches on the plan.

Cook-off winners gain ‘bragging rights’
