Jamboree adds live band

Organizers of the annual Uniopolis Volunteer Fire Department’s Jamboree are trying a couple different things this year — adding a live band and a beer tent — to the festivities.

Flags for freedom fighter

WAYNESFIELD — Members from several area veterans organizations gathered Monday and presented flags to the parents and the wife of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman, who died last Tuesday while serving in Afghanistan.
Members from the VFW Post 8445 men’s and women’s auxiliaries, the Ohio District 2 Women’s Auxiliary, Freedom’s Colors, and the Wapakoneta AMVETS served on the Color Guard as the flags were presented to Zimmerman’s father, Chris, at his home in Waynesfield, and to his wife, Morgan, and step-daughter, Riley, at their home in Fort Shawnee.

Deal reached on farm animals

WAYNESFIELD — Waynesfield Village Council members appear to have reached a compromise with two residents in the village concerning a proposal for new regulations governing farm animals within the village corporation limit.

A woman who pushed a cart full of groceries out of Walmart without paying for them Friday was apprehended by Allen County Sheriff’s Office deputies later that day.

Local youths show off singing, dancing routines, talents

The crowd and other participants at the 2013 Summer Moon Festival’s Youth Talent Show spurred on the acts and made them feel really welcomed, one of the returning performer says.
Ten acts, comprised of 15 youths aged 8 through 18, participated in the show on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of approximately 150 people gathered in the Festival Tent.
“I really liked the fact that most people were cheering you on this time — the crowd and the other competitors,” said 12-year-old Jenna Dodds, who sang “Our Song” by Taylor Swift with her best friend Elora Freistuhler.

Rain impacts street sales

Thunderstorms and rain showers may have dampened business Saturday morning at the street sales held during the Summer Moon Festival, but as the skies cleared the afternoon attendance definitely picked up.

Lunar rovers

A passion for cars and talking to people about them is what their owners say brought them out to display their customized, restored and historical vehicles along the streets of downtown Wapakoneta on Friday night.
Chris Sorensen, who restores vehicles, brought a Thunderbird he bought just a month ago to the Aug-Mer Shrine Club Car-Truck-Bike Show. He also brought a Mustang he has been showing for five years.

Six miles of county roads to be repaved

A little more than 6 miles of county roadways are to be repaved this year.
Another approximate 5 miles of township roads also are to be repaved as part of the county and townships’ annual paving program approved by Auglaize County commissioners this week.

Bid provide savings

The cost of resurfacing 8 1/2 miles of County Road 33A comes at a savings of more than $370,660.
A bid of more than $1.6 million for the project was submitted to the Auglaize County commissioners this week. Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart had estimated that the cost would be closer to $2 million.
