Retiree: Always wanted to be a teacher

As far back as she can remember, Deb Katterheinrich loved to play school.
“Many times it was with imaginary students, but even if I had real friends to play with, I was always the teacher,” said Katterheinrich, who retired at the end of the school year from teaching at Cridersville Elementary School.

Riders: Wapak is ‘friendly’ to GOBA

Wisconsin. Maryland. Kentucky. Georgia. Even Canada.
Riders from many different places echoed a common sentiment as the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) passed through Wapakoneta.
“What a friendly town.”
Cyclists had nearly all good things to say about the hospitality of Wapakoneta as many of the riders took the 100-mile loop Thursday that took them through the city. Riders are finishing up the week-long event by traveling from New Bremen to Sidney today and back to Urbana, the starting place, on Saturday. This year marks GOBA’s 25th anniversary.

Helping hands

Hundreds of bicyclists converged Thursday on Wapakoneta during an excursion to the city as part of a two-day layover in New Bremen — and local people and businesses seized on the opportunity to show the riders the city residents’ best.

Wapak Country Club clubhouse face lift

The Wapakoneta Country Club Board of Trustees recently announced the completion of clubhouse and pro shop renovations and will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday to give area residents their first glimpse at the new look.

Collision on U.S. 33

ST. MARYS — Multiple injuries have been reported stemming from a two-vehicle collision on westbound U.S. 33, just east of St. Marys this morning.

Sources on the scene said the collision involved a bus and a vehicle that reportedly left the rest area going the wrong way on U.S. 33. No further details have been released. More information will be posted when available and check Saturday's edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News for an update.

Hep C test advised

Baby boomers, who may have contracted hepatitis C before widespread testing for it was done, are being urged to get a free test now at the Auglaize County Health Department.
The testing is recommended to those with a variety of risk factors, including previous needle use, non-licensed tattoos, blood transfusions or blood exposure, living with or having sex with someone diagnosed with hepatitis C, U.S. military veterans, history of sexually transmitted diseases and unprotected sex.

Relay for Life ready

Organizers have set a goal to raise at least $50,000 this year as they prepare for this weekend’s Greater Auglaize County Relay for life.
“We are shooting for at least that much,” Relay for Life Public Relations Chair Kim Klingler said of the biggest fundraiser held annually in the county for the American Cancer Society. “The last two years we have been right at that number.”

Brown: System needs fix
