March 12th
Dressed as the late magician Harry Houdini, Kaleb Benny would rather slip the handcuffs of school work to be on a lined soccer field.
Benny, a sixth-grader at Wapakoneta Middle School, said he was no longer nervous about giving his presentation after having given his speech to two judges Friday during the annual Biography Fair.
While he likes schools, the 11-year-old son of Wendy and Steve Benny is quick to point out he would rather have given his presentation on a soccer player or be playing on the soccer field.
March 9th
Thomas Jefferson, Martha Stewart and William Shakespeare all lurked through the halls Friday at the Wapakoneta Middle School.
The sixth-graders, who held their annual Biography Fair on Thursday for parents and Friday for fellow students and judges, had the opportunity to select a famous person, research that person and then dress-up like them. All their work was judged by members of the local community.
“They worked so hard,” sixth-grade teacher Michelle Boyer said. “They know the person they are studying and are very excited.”
In 15 weeks, the Auglaize County Fairgrounds midway will host walkers for an 18-hour walk for the 15th annual Relay for Life as teams and individuals celebrate victims and survivors of cancer.
Trying to mirror the stages through which a cancer survivor endures, Relay for Life organizers have chosen the theme, “A Cure for All Seasons.”
The American Red Cross is asking everyone to help others in need by supporting the lifesaving services the national organization provides.
The director of the Auglaize County Branch of the American Red Cross is making a special plea for the community’s support in March, which is Red Cross Month.
Members garner national, state awards, honors
The number of awards achieved is not always the true measure of a good year, a Wapakoneta FFA adviser told FFA members and parents Thursday night.
With approximately 4,000 people attending Thursday’s banquet, Wapakoneta FFA advisers Ron Brown and Chris Turner discussed the fact so many FFA students had done so well throughout the year.
While specific project plans are still being discussed for 2012, Auglaize County Engineer’s Office administrators know what kind of prices they are looking at for stone and concrete materials to complete some of the projects.
Bids for the rock and gravel aggregate recently were received by the Engineer’s Office and the two products are to be used as needed throughout the year. All bids were accepted and a company will be selected for each project to the best advantage of the county.

A school and police investigation into an incident at the Wapakoneta Middle School revealed a student acted out of frustration when he made a comment about the shooting at Columbine High School.
Parents of Wapakoneta Middle School students received a letter Thursday about school administrators being informed “a student made reference to there being a ‘Columbine issue at Wapakoneta Middle School’ ” and taking action.
UNIOPOLIS — The small village of Otway in southwestern Ohio was fortunate to not have any deaths in its community during the March 2 tornado outbreak that ravaged the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys as well as much of the south. However, fate wasn’t as kind to much of the equipment at the volunteer Otway Fire Department.
St. MARYS — With less federal and state funding and fewer grants available, Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) members are making financial plans for the future.
“We’re having discussions,” Wapak-oneta Fire Chief and LEPC Chair Kendall Krites told the group during a regular meeting Wednesday in St. Marys. “I have concerns looking down the road.”
After leading the congregation in an opening prayer, the Rev. Steve Nelson, of First English Lutheran Church, went back to his seat, picked up a baseball bat with his right hand and put a baseball cap on his head.
He then returned to the podium to give his meditation at the weekly Lenten Luncheon, sponsored by the Wapakoneta Area Ministerial Association.
Nelson spoke Wednesday on the topic of “He saved others, he cannot save himself” during the Lenten Luncheon at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
