History to be made: W-G teacher named ‘Ohio History Teacher of the Year’

Each year, graduating seniors at Waynesfield-Goshen High School are asked if any particular teacher had a positive influence on their academic career.

Most often, the name mentioned is high school history teacher Joe Foster.

Now, those voices are being heard at the state level.

On Thursday, the  Gilder Lehman Institute of American History announced Foster as the 2012 Ohio History Teacher of the Year.

Talk about timing. There is a lot of truth to the saying, “Being in the right place at the right time.”

Flashing back nearly 30 years to 1983, Steve Schuler, 56, was attending the Auglaize County Fair with his wife, Janet Schuler, after having just returned from college at Kent State.

Wapakoneta City Schools Principal Don Numbers also happened to be in attendance that day.

The class president and captain of the football team soon will add another accomplishment to his long list of achievements as he joins the ranks of a U.S. soldier.

Chris Schwartz, the 18-year-old son of Laura and Brent Schwartz, of Wapakoneta, begins his future at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in the fall, after six weeks of basic training in July.
