Speller takes bee title

Two fifth-graders shined during an annual spelling bee, but a seventh-grader claimed the win — and could finally call the title her own.

Wapakoneta Middle School student Loren Hire placed first during the Wapakoneta Middle School Spelling Bee on Thursday afternoon.

“It feels really good, because the other years I got second and third,” Hire said of the win.

In 2010, during her fifth-grade year, she placed third, and in 2011, her sixth-grade year, she placed second, both behind LeeAnn Jose.

Reform key to budget

A U.S. congressman from Ohio continues to hammer that tax reform, entitlement reform and regulatory reform need to be part of the budget discussion to avoid this and future fiscal cliffs.

Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, who vowed to stay in Washington, D.C. through the holidays to work on a budget deal, says it important Congress “stay here and get its work done with the president in resolving this issue” because the alternative will weaken an already weak economic recovery.

Options discussed for old county records

Options for storing Auglaize County’s old paper records are being discussed going into the new year.

In a meeting with representatives of the Clerk’s of Court’s Office, Common Pleas Court and Informational Technology Department, the Auglaize County commissioners this week sat down to develop a “game plan” for short- and long-term storage of these records.

FAA funds sought

The Neil Armstrong Airport plans to file a pre-application for more than $600,000 in construction funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Auglaize County Airport Manager Sean Stroh said the pre-application, approved by the Auglaize County commissioners, serves as a placeholder for funding from the FAA and is something they put in for every year to cover annual projects.

Possible voter fraud being probed

A possible case of voter fraud is being turned over to the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

Auglaize County Elections Board Director Carolyn Campbell said in reconciling signature books after the Nov. 6 presidential election, they came across an incident of possible fraud where a voter cast ballots twice — once in the wrong precinct and once in the right precinct.

BOE reviews details of new school

BOTKINS — Botkins Local Schools Board of Education members Wednesday reviewed several details concerning the new school scheduled to be built in the community.

Closing date for the property purchase is scheduled for Dec. 21, and zoning for the property will be finalized in January.

Cridersville fills post

An area village will be welcoming a familiar face to a new post come New Year’s Day.

Cridersville Village Council members selected Jarid Kohlrieser as their new village administrator. He will assume the responsibilities of the position starting Jan. 1.

Cridersville Mayor Lorali Myers, who announced his hiring at Monday’s village council meeting, noted that Kohlrieser has a passion and a dedication for the village.

“He knows the village and he will do a wonderful job,” Myers said.
