More than half a foot of snow and high winds forced Wapakoneta and Auglaize County crews to hit the roads Wednesday to help travelers get home as many work places closed early.
Wapakoneta Safety-Service Director Bill Rains explained the city operated with a different plan of attack for the winter storm that dumped approximately 5 inches of snow starting at daybreak and another 3 inches of snow during the afternoon.
Local businesses saw increases in sales for snow removal equipment Wednesday as a storm hit the Auglaize County area Wednesday and dumped more than half-a-foot of snow.
While they did see an increase in sales for shovels, snow blowers and other appliances, the normal rush for equipment prior to a forecasted storm was not as busy as usual.
“I think a lot of people were just afraid to go out,” Wapakoneta Sears store owner Ted Yewey said. “We did sell a few snowblowers and some shovels, but we still have plenty left.”
As more shootings and attacks in public places make the news, Auglaize County employees have been trained in what to do if such an event were to happen here.
While most of the details cannot be shared, county officials agree about the importance in being prepared for the worst case scenario.
Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said with the reopening of the Auglaize County Courthouse this fall after renovations, additional security measures were put in place. As part of that, courthouse staff and other county employees were given training.

A winter storm that blanketed the region today was expected to dump close to a foot of snow on Auglaize County.
Late Tuesday night, the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for Auglaize County. That warning, which is in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday, is calling for 8 to 10 inches of snow as well as wind gusts of 40 mph. The high winds, coupled with heavy snowfall, caused near white-out conditions and posed risks to motorists who traversed city and county roads today.
