New troopers take to roads

Five new troopers have taken to Auglaize County roadways to help keep motorists safe.
The new Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) troopers are Nathan R. Wathey, Paige C. Miranda, Brian Mull, Dewaine Anthony Norman, and Corey Resendez.
Wathey, 22, grew up in West Point and is living in Wapakoneta, since his assignment to the OSHP Wapakoneta Post.
The graduate of Beaver Local High School and Kent State University has past restaurant experience and spent time as a junior high wrestling coach.

Police seek help in catching thieves

Local law enforcement officers seek assistance in gaining leads into stolen items from a local retailer.
Wapakoneta Police Department Detective Pat Green is seeking information regarding the theft of cell phones from Radio Shack, 1252 Bellefontaine St. on Nov. 16.
Green said a store employee locked and closed the store at 9 p.m. Nov. 15 and returned to open the store at 10 a.m. Nov. 16 when the employee found the door unlocked and a large number of cell phones stolen.
The suspects forcibly entered the store through the front door. There are no known suspects at this time.

Parts on the way

Parts to fix the Ametek-Westchester Substation and the Bellefontaine Street traffic signal at the entrance to Walmart should arrive soon after a malfunction at the substation left many businesses without power on Thursday.
Wapakoneta Electric Superintendent Don Schnarre said sections of Wapakoneta experienced a total electric power failure or their lights flickering Thursday afternoon when the substation failed. Several businesses, including McDonald’s Restaurant and Burger King, lost power at approximately 1 p.m. Thursday as well as other retail and residents fed from the substation.

Uniopolis mayor resigns

UNIOPOLIS — Uniopolis Mayor Bill Rolston apparently has resigned, village councilors learned during Thursday’s meeting.

When arriving for the meeting, Council President Greg Ritchie found a letter apparently from Rolston informing councilors of his resignation.

Councilors did not immediately accept the resignation. After a brief executive session, councilors came out and informed a crowd of approximately 15 people of the letter. Ritchie explained since the letter was unsigned, councilors chose not to officially accept it until they could verify it.

Goodwill to open in Wapak

A Goodwill store will soon be opening its doors in Wapakoneta.

The Goodwill Easter Seals of Miami Valley will be opening up a Goodwill store at 1240 Bellefontaine St., in the shopping center across from Walmart, in February.

Miami Valley is the headquarters for the Wapakoneta region, which reaches as far north as Lima and as far south as Lebanon, and serves 23 counties.

LEPC to offer grants

Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) members plan to offer scholarships for professional development for all types of emergency personnel.

Wapakoneta Fire Chief Kendall Krites, who serves as LEPC chair, said after being approached about funding a trip to the academy for a couple of firefighters, LEPC members began discussing utilizing money available for training in other capacities as well.
