June 17, 2014

Mark J. Schaub, 56, of Wapakoneta, died at 7:40 a.m., Monday, June 16, 2014, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, in Columbus, following a sudden illness. He was born April 2, 1958, in Lima, the son of Raymond U. and Helen Louise (Elliott) Schaub, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his partner of 30 years, John “Jay” Miller, in Wapakoneta.

Connie Lynn (Sholler) Cox, 68, of Celina, died peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home near Wapakoneta, surrounded by her children, Sunday morning, June 15th, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. after a brief illness.

Update: Rural crash kills Wapak man

LOGAN TOWNSHIP — A Wapakoneta man was pronounced dead at the scene after a crash involving a golf cart and a Jeep at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of Conant and Monroe Roads in Logan Township, northwest of Buckland.

“We found that a golf cart had failed to yield from a stop sign to an oncoming vehicle,” said Sergeant Kristina Bennett with the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

District, teachers ink deal

The Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education approved a three-year teaching contract by a vote of 4-0 with one abstention at a special board meeting Monday night.

The contract, which will remain effective through June 2017, is a new collective bargaining agreement that was negotiated by representatives from the district’s teacher’s union, the Wapakoneta Education Association, (WEA) and the board of education.

The board and the WEA released the following joint statement at Monday’s meeting:

New computer business hopes to keep repair costs down

The costs that come with repairing a computer, tablet, phone and other devices can sometimes be overly high and intimidating.

Information Technology Services Manager of the Auglaize County District Public Library, Fred Miller believes high prices for technological repairs hinder the customers’ needs more than helping fix the problem. That is why Miller opened is own business.

Man dead in golf cart crash

A man was found dead on the scene after an accident involving a golf cart and a Jeep at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of Conant and Monroe Roads in northwest Buckland.

"We found that a golf cart had failed to yield from a stop sign to an oncoming vehicle," Sergeant Kristina Bennett, with the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said.

Bennett said the driver of the golf cart was traveling eastbound and the driver of the black 4-door Jeep was traveling southbound.

Young eagles get chance to soar

NEW KNOXVILLE — Youth between the ages of 8 and 17 were treated to free airplane rides Saturday at Neil Armstrong Airport in New Knoxville.

The rides were offered by members of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 922.

The purpose of the annual event, called Young Eagles Day, is to get youth interested in flying.

Although parents were required to attend, the focus was on the young riders.

Fund drive seeks to raise $10k

The Downtown Wapakoneta Partnership’s Facade Improvement Committee has set a goal to raise at least $10,000 in funding from private investors by July 31.

The fundraising campaign, which officially began May 3, was established to raise enough money to match or exceed the $10,000 grant given to the DWP by the Wapakoneta City Council for the facade improvement program.

All money raised through private and public entities will be matched by downtown business owners who apply for grant money for facade improvement.

Replica Rover gets workout

On a mission to explore Mars, a few local residents experienced what it is like to drive the Mars rover — or a replica, hand held rover, at the Auglaize County District Library on Saturday.

“It moves like a remote control car. It drives the exact same way,”  Education programing specialist Katelyn Poland, with the Armstrong Air and Space Museum. “There’s a camera on top, similar to the actual Mars rover. It transmits a signal that I can pick up here and then it’ll show on the computer screen what it sees.”

Teachers ratify 3-year contract

Wapakoneta teachers reportedly ratified a three-year contract Saturday in an agreement with the the board of education and the Wapakoneta Education Association.

There will be a special board meeting held tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the board office for the purpose of voting on the contact. The 2014-15 school calendar is also expected to be voted on at tonight's meeting.
