Personnel matters approved

September 30, 2011

Supplemental contracts and other personnel matters were approved during a regular meeting of the Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education this week.
Other matters also approved included donations, acceptance of inter-district open enrollment students and attendance on an overnight field trip for high school students to attend the FFA National Convention.
Two donations accepted were from Dr. Matthew M. Jose, with $1,500 donated to the tennis courts and $1,725 to Great Lakes Theatre.

Elmer H. Will, 88

Elmer H. Will, 88, of New Bremen, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at 5:39 a.m. at the St. Rita’s Medical Center, in Lima.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1923 in Carthagena. He is the son of Ida F. (Kaup) and Ferd D. Will.
On Aug. 29, 1953 he married Lela J. Bauer, who survives in Minster.
Also surviving is his daughter Peggy (Mark) Kitzmiller, of New Bremen.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, in New Bremen, with the Rev. Thomas Mannebach officiating. Burial will be in the German Protestant Cemetery near New Bremen.

Mary Kathryn Place Baker, 93

Mary Kathryn Place Baker, 93, of Wapakoneta, passed away 6:03 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011. She was born Jan. 14, 1918, the first daughter of Stanley B. and Lela (Graessle) Place, who preceded her in death.
On Sept. 27, 1939, she married Robert F. Baker, and he survives in Wapakoneta.

Anna Louise Koch, 101

Anna Louise (Fisher) Koch, 101, died peacefully at her home Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, on Casey Key, Fla.
She was born on November 23, 1909, on her grandfather’s farm on Fisher Road, north of Wapakoneta, the daughter of Anna Catherine (Stein) and Charles William Fisher, founders of Fisher Cheese Co., which at one time was Wapakoneta’s largest employer. On July 7, 1932, she married her friend and former high school classmate George Henry Koch.

Mary Baker, 93

Mary Baker, 93, of Wapakoneta, died Thursday evening, Sept. 29, 2011, at Wapakoneta Manor.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Douglas E. Weaver, 57

September 30, 2011

Douglas E. Weaver, 57, 15784 Koenig Road in St. Marys, died Sunday Sept. 25, 2011 at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was born May 28, 1954, in Coldwater, to Mary Jane (Monnier) and Elmer Weaver.
On Jan. 13, 1979 in St. Marys, he married Donna Jean Wogaman, who survives.
He is survived by his parents; a daughter, Cindy Jones, of Sidney; and three sons Mark Sharp, of New Bremen, Mike Weaver, of Spencerville, and Keith Weaver, of Cincinnati.

Helen Smith, 100

Helen Hazel (Swink) Smith, 100, 1011 Kensington Lane, Celina, died at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the Miller House in Celina.
She was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of the late Mary (Varner) and Harry Swink. On Aug. 25, 1933 she married Gerald William Smith, who died in 1982.
Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn Sue Locke, of Mansfield; two grandchildren Kyle (Kelly) Coe, of Findlay, and Kami (Jerry) Minor, of Rockford, Ill.; four great-grandchildren Kira Coe and Kaleb Coe both, of Findlay, Garald Cress, of Cridersville, and Jimi Bennett, of Rockford, Ill.

VOLLEYBALL: Titans sweep Redskins

One minute the Wapakoneta Redskins were in the match.
The next they weren’t.
The Ottawa-Glandorf Titans rallied to overcome a sizable second-game deficit to win that game and roll to sweep the Redskins in three games in battle for Western Buckeye League volleyball supremacy Thursday at Wapakoneta High School.
After dropping the first game 25-18, the Redskins were just two points away from tying it at a game apiece with a 23-16 lead in the second.

TENNIS: Klock advances to WBL semis

LIMA — Wapakoneta Redskins senior Makenzie Klock advanced to the semifinal round of the Western Buckeye League varsity girls tennis tournament with a win Thursday at the University of Northwestern Ohio courts.
Playing first singles, Klock bumped off No. 5 seed Mariah Krugh of St. Marys in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 in their quarterfinal match.
Klock advances to face Shawnee’s Lauren Rovner, the top seed in first singles, in the semifinals. Semi-final play starts Saturday at 9 a.m.

GIRLS GOLF: Wapak routs Celina in WBL finale

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team rolled to a 207-273 win over the Celina Bulldogs in its final Western Buckeye League match of the year Wednesday at a rainy Wapakoneta Country Club.
Despite the rainy conditions, the Redskins score was just two strokes off their team average.
Wapak is 9-10 overall and 2-5 in the WBL. Celina is 1-10 and 1-8.
Redskins senior Courtney Knippen fired a 44 to earn medalist honors in her final home match.
Rounding out the scoring for the Redskins were Shelby Kohler (50), Hannah Smith (55) and Bryly Beaman (58).
