TENNIS: 'Skins improve to 2-0

SIDNEY — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls tennis team picked up its second win in as many matches with a 4-1 win over the Sidney Yellow Jackets on Thursday in Sidney.
In first singles, Wapak senior Makenzie Klock rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Kassi Edwards.
Redskins senior Shelby Gillespie topped Monica Kislig 7-6, 6-3 in second singles.
Junior Annie Harrod rounded out a sweep of the singles matches for Wapak with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Katie Salyers.
The Redskins also won in first doubles as junior Katie Martin and freshman Kirsten Wellons pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win.

GOLF: New Knoxville edges W-G

WAYNESFIELD — The New Knoxville Rangers boys golf team defeated the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, 185-200, in a dual match opening win for the Rangers on Thursday at Prairie View Golf Course in Waynesfield.
W-G senior Justus Ball was the match medalist with a 41.
Garret Hopenstein shot a 46 for the Tigers. Eric Shaner recorded a 55 and Ryan Agnew turned in a 58 to round out the scoring for the all-senior Tigers squad.
Tyler Shreve led the way for New Knoxville with a 42.
Justin Slaven shot a 45, David Boesche added a 48 and Michael Porter carded a 50 for the winning Rangers.

Betty LaWarre, 90

Betty E. LaWarre, 90, of Titusville, Fla., formerly of Cridersville, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at the Tranquility Haven Care Center in Titusville.
She was born July 26, 1921, in Lima, the daughter of Minerva M. (Eulrich) and William A. Biddinger. On May 23, 1942, she married Robert W. LaWarre Sr., who died April 24, 1997.
Surviving are two sons, Robert W. (Lorea) LaWarre II, of Memphis, Tenn., and Ned (Kim) LaWarre, of Titusville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy D. LaWarre; and a daughter, Pennie L. Tone.

Scholarship fund established for teen

Family and friends of a Wapakoneta teenager who died after a seven-year battle with brain cancer have established a memorial scholarship fund in his honor.
In their first efforts to raise money for the scholarships, which they plan to present to Jason Strauser’s classmates upon graduation next spring, a golf outing was held last weekend.
The idea for the Jason Strauser Memorial Scholarship Fund came from Erin Fisher, who graduated from Wapakoneta High School this year.

Family donates hair together

Long, luscious locks run in the family of a former Wapakoneta man.
Jim Folk, his wife and two daughters all had several inches of their hair cut, as a family, to donate to a national organization that plans to use it to make wigs for those suffering hair loss from a variety of medical conditions.
At the beginning of August, Folk, a 1996 graduate of Wapakoneta High School, and his family made a trip to Great Clips, near their home in Cincinnati, to get their hair cut. More than just a trim, the entire family got several inches of their hair clipped to donate to Locks of Love.

State drainage conference held in Wapakoneta

The Auglaize County Engineer’s Office hosted the Ohio Drainage Conference on Wednesday in the Junior Fair Building at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.
The event, which formerly used to be for West Central Ohio, has grown and is now a state-wide conference, said Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart. More than 120 people attended the conference this week.

Lois Wood, 82

Lois L. Wood, 82, 04893 McKinley Road, St. Marys, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at her residence.
She was born January 5, 1929, in Mendon, the daughter of Mabel (Mutersbaugh) and David Boroff. On May 19, 1948, she married David Wood and he preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1997.
She is survived by her five children: Lana Boos, of St. Marys, Michael Wood, of Delaware, Deborah West, of Lima, Pamela McKee, of Springfield, and Teresa (Brad) Pyles, of St. Marys.
Private graveside services are being held at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, with the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray officiating.

P. Jeanne McFarland, 78

P. Jeanne McFarland, 78, of St. Marys, died at 1:34 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in St. Marys.
She was born Aug. 23, 1932, in Logan Co. On Oct. 14, 1968, she married William “Bill” McFarland, and he survives in St. Marys.
Also surviving are two sisters, Barb “Toni” Koch, of Toledo, MaryGene Harman, of Maryland; numerous nieces & nephews, including Teri, Mike, Ryan, and Kim Yahl, and Mike and Tim Harman; a sister-in-law, Susie Thompson; and two brothers-in-law, P.J. Burnett, and John McFarland.

GOLF: JV boys take 3rd

The Wapakoneta Redskins junior varsity boys golf team traveled to Arrowhead for a JV quad match with Minster, New Bremen and Marion Local.
"For being the first match of the season for the JV's, we played well," Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. "I thought we really did a nice job competing with the other teams."
The Redskins shot a team total of 192 and placed 3rd out of four teams. New Bremen won with a 178, followed by Minster 185, Wapak 192, and Marion Local 219.

Additions made to Cridersville facility

CRIDERSVILLE — New outside additions are sprucing up a medical facility in Cridersville.
The Cridersville Healthcare Center recently held an official grand opening event to celebrate its newly built gazebo, awning and fencing.
“We are pleased that our lovely new garden will add to the charming landscape of our community,” said Cridersville Healthcare Center Administrator Albert Parton.
The gazebo, along with the fencing and canopy, were made possible through the generosity of Opal Miller, a resident of The Gardens in Wapakoneta, the sister facility to Cridersville Healthcare Center.
