Elbert L. Baird, 88

Elbert L. Baird, 88, of 11309 Bobwhite Lane, in St. Marys, died at 12:39 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, in Lima.
He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Old Washington, to Vera A. (Boyd) and Charles M. Baird.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Dorcas (Woolley) Baird; and a wife, Marjorie (Potter) Hammann-Baird.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Funeral rites are scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Monday at Meyer Community Chapel of Otterbein – St. Marys, with the Rev. Dennis Gaertner officiating. Burial is to follow at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia.

A perfect crust isn't pie in sky

When Thanksgiving approaches and thoughts turn to pie, many cooks have discovered they can have a crusty situation on their hands.
Rolling out a picture-perfect pie crust can be a challenge for the most seasoned baker, but particularly for home cooks who may only bake pies from scratch a few times each year.
Akron, Ohio, resident Helen Weyrick has been using the same shortening-based recipe for her pie crust for more than 60 years. But lately, she said she has been frustrated with it.
"It gets too sticky and I had to keep adding flour and adding flour," she said.

The awards continue to pile in for the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team.

Four Redskins seniors were named to the Division II First Team when the All-Northwest District awards were announced Thursday evening.

“I am very proud of our young men who received All-District recognition,” Wapak varsity coach Doug Frye said. “They had an outstanding season for us. They were a major factor in our team’s 10-win season.”

On the offensive side of the ball, senior right guard Chris Schwartz was named the district co-offensive lineman of the year.

The Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education has filed an unfair labor practice charge against its teacher union based on actions conducted during negotiations which have been extended since April between the two entities.

Acres rates to increase

Auglaize Acres residents will be paying more per day for their rooms beginning Jan. 1.
The Auglaize County commissioners approved the rate increases proposed by Auglaize Acres Administrator Connie Pierce on Thursday. On average the increase is $5 per day.
Under the new rates, residents of the county nursing home are to pay $180 per day for semi-private rooms with shared bathrooms, $187.50 per day in the memory unit, $190 per day with a private room and shared bathroom, and $192.50 per day for a private room with a private bathroom.

WHS grad to perform at senior recital, conduct show

A graduate of Wapakoneta High School has reached a milestone in his college career, as he will be performing at his senior recital this weekend.
Adam Fahncke, a 2006 graduate of Wapakoneta High School, is a four-year student at Ohio Northern University where he is studying music and business management. He has been preparing for his recital ever since he entered college.
“It takes many hours, not only sitting at a piano, but I work on score study, studying the music, learning the music and memorizing the music,” Fahncke said. “It’s a long process.”

Bernard Schweitzer, 81

November 18, 2011

Bernard I. Schweitzer, 81, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:05 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born May 2, 1930, in Pusheta Township, Auglaize County, the son of Lucille (Steinke) and Alfred Schweitzer, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 25, 1955, he married Virginia Gerstner, and she survives.
