BASKETBALL: Redskins suffer second close loss

ST. HENRY — Someone asked Matt Bradley how he was doing Saturday night.

“I’m not sure how to answer that,” said the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball coach.

Bradley had just watched his squad come up just short in a close game against a strong opponent for the second night in a row.

On Friday, Wapak’s late rally came just a little too late as the Redskins fell to the undefeated, Western Buckeye League-favorite Elida Bulldogs, 46-41.

Elodie Sollman, 96

Elodie M. Sollman, 96, of New Bremen, died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Otterbein of St. Marys.
She was born Sept. 13, 1915, in New Bremen, the daughter of Josephine G. (Bruns) and Joseph W. Lanfersieck. On Sept. 12, 1981, she married Lendor Sollman, who died on Feb. 8, 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial is to be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen with the Rev. Thomas Mannebach officiating. Burial is to follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.

Shopping with a cop: Law enforcement bring smiles to families

For deputies, police officers and troopers, they pursue a career in law enforcement to protect and to serve — those duties are not always isolated to stopping law breakers.
For a group of 55 members of law enforcement from police officers to dispatchers, from probation officers to victim’s advocates, they felt it was important to help make Christmas for 103 families more enjoyable and to bring smiles to children’s faces.

Studies help with future: Studies to help determine utility prices

Cost-of-service studies on utility rates charged to Wapakoneta consumers should help city elected officials determine future increases to deal with higher costs of business and mandated projects.
Wapakoneta City Council Councilor-at-large Steve Walter, who also chairs the Utility Committee, told city administrators he would like to have rate studies completed on water, wastewater, electric and refuse to help his committee set future rates.

Cassius Ledley, 81

Cassius D. “Buck” Ledley, 81, of New Hampshire, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born July 20, 1930, in Union County, the son of the late Laura A. Vanest and Jasper N. Ledley. On June 4, 1950, in Delaware County, he married Ida Irene Kuba and she preceded him in death.

John Nixon, 76

John R. Nixon, 76, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at Lima Memorial Health Systems.
He was born July 27, 1935, in Clarksburg, W. Va., to Stella Pearl Bartlett and George Jefferson Sr., who preceded him in death. On Jan. 8, 1956, he married Barbara Ann Hefner and she survives in Wapakoneta.
Also surviving are a son, Mark Alan (Merry) Nixon, of Wapakoneta; a daughter, Jolene Ann (Mark) Waitman, of Waynesfield; two grandchildren, Kyle A. Waitman and Brock D. Waitman; and a brother, George Jefferson Nixon Jr., of Lima.

Student breaks school record, to become engineer after HS

A local student unexpectedly broke a school record for a sport that he has competed in since his freshman year of high school.
Wapakoneta High School senior Ryan Kremer broke the school’s record in the 200-meter individual medley this year during a swim meet — and said setting the record was one of his most memorable moments so far during his senior year.
“I wasn’t really expecting it,” Kremer said. “It was sweet because everyone was cheering for me at the meet.”
Kremer broke the record this season, at the beginning of December, in a swim meet against Marion Local and Bath.
