Margaret Dickman, 88

February 13, 2012

Margaret Mary Clementz Dickman, 88, of Cridersville, previously of Lima; St. Louis, Mich.; and Ottawa, died at 2:42 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born July 2, 1923, in Kalida, the daughter of the late Mary Miller and Frank Wehri. On July 31, 1946, she married Eugene Clementz, who died Jan. 23, 1985. On Dec. 6, 1986, she married Ferd Dickman, who died May 18, 1992. On Dec. 5, 2004, she married Roman Eickholt Sr., who survives in Cridersville.

WRESTLING: WBL three-peat

DEFIANCE — Coming into this season, Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Rostorfer knew if the Redskins were going to three-peat as Western Buckeye League champions it would take hard work, dedication and a little bit of that Redskin mojo.

Not only did the Redskins have a target coming into this season on their back as the defending champs but they had lost a core of quality seniors to graduation and were not as experienced as past Wapakoneta teams.

Laws of Life: WHS students honored by essay contest

Three Wapakoneta High School students were honored recently as the school’s top essay writers in the Laws of Life Essay Contest.

Mutsuo Sasaki, the son of Yuko and Jim Mankin; Stephanie Bracey, the daughter of Steve Bracey and Carla Crawford; and Chastity Austin, the daughter of Scott Austin, were chosen as Wapakoneta’s best and represented the school recently at an awards banquet held at the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center in Lima.

Tourney raises money for cancer

Nearly 150 people participated Sunday in the VFW District 2 annual fundraising bowling tournament held at Astro Lanes.

Proceeds from the tournament are earmarked to help cancer patients and their families and National Military Services, which provides assistance and support to military families in need.

In all, 29 five-person teams participated in the tournament. All the teams were comprised of VFW members or its auxiliaries in District 2. The tournament included teams from Spencerville, Celina, Sidney, Lima, Wapakoneta and St. Marys.

St. Marys Board of Education talks cuts, future levy

ST. MARYS — A local board of education held a work session Saturday morning to discuss the financial state of the St. Marys City School District and the possibility of cuts and a levy in the future.

Treasurer Tom Sommer gathered financial information for the board to review in beginning its budget talks. Sommer gathered information starting from 2004, when voters passed the emergency levy. He also included the forecast that was recently approved by board members.

BOWLING: Redskins run the table

LIMA — Fifteen up, fifteen down.

The Wapakoneta Redskins got big days from Anthony Kennard and Zach Miller and rolled past the previously unbeaten Versailles Tigers on Saturday to wrap up a perfect 15-0 regular season and win the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference title.

Kennard, a senior, rolled individual games of 289 and 259.  Miller, a junior, turned in scores of 267 and 257.

Together, they posted the top four individual rounds of the day among the 16 schools competing at 20th Century Lanes in Lima.

BASKETBALL: Trojans trump Tigers

WAYNESFIELD — The Botkins Trojans broke a four-game losing streak with a 74-50 win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in a non-league varsity boys basketball matchup Saturday night in Waynesfield.

The Trojans improved to 8-10 overall. The Tigers fell to 6-11.

Intense defensive pressure by the Trojans caused the Tigers to struggle during the first half of play.

W-G got into foul trouble early, with 15 in the first half, helping Botkins rack up easy points. Botkins lead 32-27 at halftime.

BASKETBALL: Cougars sink 'Skins

The Van Wert Cougars started out so fast they nearly left skid marks on the floor of the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Van Wert raced out to an early 24-7 lead, withstood Wapak’s lone rally, and posted a 59-44 win in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game Friday.

The Cougars hit five of their first six shots and finished the quarter 10-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-3 from three-point range.

BASKETBALL: Rockets hold off Trojans

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans made several runs.  

But Anna proved to be just too much as the Rockets cruised to a 73-61 win in a Shelby County League varsity boys basketball game Friday at Botkins High School.

The Trojans briefly took a 20-18 lead early in the second quarter when Tyler Egbert scored from the paint on back-to back trips down the floor and then connected on the second of a pair of free throws.

Grants expected to help aid recycling

Grants applied for by the Auglaize County Solid Waste District should assist with county recycling if they are awarded locally.
A community development grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) would be used to purchase needed equipment to help with county recycling efforts.
