Douglas J. Baker, 50

September 28, 2012

Douglas J. Baker, 50, of Lima, died at 5:50 p.m. Sept. 26, 2012, at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born June 26, 1962, in Lima, the son of Evelyn Irene (Weburg) and Bobby Baker, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 9, 1985, he married Diane L. Knowlton, who survives.

Marguerite Hile Stewart, 96

Marguerite Hile Stewart, 96, of Lima, died at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Otterbein-Cridersville Skilled Nursing.
She was born July 27, 1916, in Cridersville, to Jenny (Burden) and Charles Baker (deceased). On Aug. 6, 1938, she married Rollin H. Hile, who after 61 years of marriage, died Jan. 9, 1999 at age 88. On April 3, 2004, she married George C. Stewart, who survives in Lima.

Mayor compensation

The highest paid mayor in Auglaize County is not the highest compensated in the county, an investigation into mayoral salaries and benefits show.

St. Marys Mayor Pat McGowan is the highest paid with an annual salary of $15,000, followed by Wapakoneta Mayor Rodney Metz with an annual salary of $10,000.

Dispatcher answers last call

An Auglaize County dispatcher reported to work for the last time Friday — ending nearly a 24-year career with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.

Carolyn Zenz, who started more than two decades ago, celebrated her career Friday with former and current dispatchers and deputies at the Sheriff’s Office.

“Carolyn Zenz has been a great asset to this office,” fellow dispatcher Mary Vorhees said.

Her ability to multi-task did not escape the eye of Sheriff Al Solomon.

C’ville to plant new trees

CRIDERSVILLE — After much research and review, an area tree commission is ready to start on a big project.

Cridersville Tree Commission members are now ready to plant trees on the tree lawn on Main Street in the village.

Tree Commission Vice President Stacey Cook notified Cridersville Village Council members during Thursday’s Committee-of-the-Whole meeting that three different species of trees will be planted, which are maple, cherry and snow crab. Cook also is a member of the council.

CRIDERSVILLE — Cridersville Village Council members and local residents took advantage of a chance to speak their minds on a pressing issue in the village.

Cridersville Village Council Safety Committee members Thursday addressed the ownership and housing of animals within the village.

Before the second reading of an ordinance addressing pit bulls at the last regular council meeting, Cridersville Police Chief John Drake requested councilors table the issue after listening to concerns of the residents.

Finland student studies at W-G

WAYNESFIELD — Roope Metsa’s experience of being a foreign exchange student at Waynesfield-Goshen High School has produced plenty of positives for all.

Metsa, 18, who is a native of Finland, coming from the city of Jarvenpaa, said the country’s most popular sport is ice hockey and not football — a sport he now plays for the Tigers.

Bonfire canceled

Due to the recent rain the past three days, the bonfire and associated activities at Harmon Field have been canceled for tonight. It was supposed to start at 7:40 p.m. at the football field and move to the softball diamond to the east of the Wapakoneta WaterPark. Organizers thought it best to cancel the event to the wet ground and mud in the area.

NEW HAMPSHIRE — While an investigation is incomplete, a fire that caused extensive damage to a residence at 13290 McBeth Road in New Hampshire Wednesday night appears to have been caused by an overloaded circuit at an electrical outlet.

Wayne Township Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 8:52 p.m. Wednesday after a report of a fire at the residence to the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.
