SOFTBALL: Bath bats too much for Wapak

The Bath Wildkittens scored early, and they scored often.

Bath quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and continued to pound the ball throughout the game in a 10-0, run rule-shortened win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity softball game Friday at Wapakoneta High School.

The lineup hit from top to bottom.

ROUNDUP: Wapak netters blank Bath

The Wapakoneta Redskins rolled to a 5-0 sweep of the Bath Wildcats in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys tennis match Friday at the Rotary Club courts at Wapakoneta High School.

With the win, Wapak is now 4-4 overall and 3-1 in WBL play.  Bath is 0-5 and 0-4.

Wapak’s Nic Oen posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jason Lauf in first singles.

In second singles it was Joey Jose cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Nick Cunningham.

Andy Faller completed the singles sweep, besting Garrett Renner 6-2, 6-1 in third singles.

Dunkin' Donuts in Wapak?

An analysis of the city’s demographics and location along Interstate 75 and near U.S. 33 proves Wapakoneta would be an ideal location for a Dunkin’ Donuts, a company executive says, but the company does not operate and manage stores and thus a franchisee would have to be found.
Dunkin’ Donuts Franchising and Marketing Vice President Grant Benson said an area where people work, shop and play is a potential location for a Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant.
He noted stores could be in downtown Columbus, a suburb, or in a rural community such as Wapakoneta.

W-G hosts mock crash

While a mock crash was staged Friday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School prior to prom weekend, the reaction of what it can be like felt real for several students.
The mock crash came with all the effects. Prom goers, who had been drinking, were staged to have a head-on collision with another prom patron who had not been drinking. Cars were cut open so victims could be removed and treated. The collision resulted in one fatality, who was removed from the car and loaded into a hearse.

Contest adds fun to event

One of the first men to wear the crown of “Miss Relay” at the Auglaize County Relay for Life said he would encourage others to wear a dress, get made up and don a wig for the fun event.
Scott Steinke, better known as “Porky,” of Fryburg, was crowned in 2000 in an event few people have forgotten.
Laura Kelley, team recruiter for this year’s Auglaize County Relay for Life, remembers well how Steinke looked in that outfit.
“I heard about the contest and I like to have a good time,” Steinke said. “I told the women on my team to ‘make me pretty.’”

Operation busts nine: Pair arrested in Wapak Wal-Mart parking lot for trafficking

A two-day enforcement initiative in Auglaize and Mercer counties netted nine felony arrests — including two drug arrests in Wapakoneta resulting in men receiving $1 million bonds — and more than $20,000 in drugs seized.

Seven local law enforcement agencies joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol in its Operation Shield program targeting traffic safety and criminal activity in the two-county area on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Screenings prompts referrals

Auglaize County Health Department officials presented the number of children screened and subsequent referrals made after recent Help Me Grow screenings to Health Board members this week.

Help Me Grow Project Director Charlotte Axe reported they screened approximately 80 children, 50 of which were in Wapakoneta.

Workshop helps with unexpected obstacles

A workshop to help community members handle life’s unexpected obstacles will soon be held in Wapakoneta.

The Community Health Professionals Tri-County and Schlosser Funeral Home are co-hosting a workshop “Leaving a Love Legacy,” which will present practical tips for organizing important documents that are needed in the event of an emergency or sudden death of a spouse or significant other.

FOOTBALL: OHSAA adds 7th division

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio High School Athletic Association will be adding a seventh tournament division in football beginning in 2013, Commissioner Daniel B. Ross has announced. The addition of a seventh division was approved by the OHSAA’s Board of Directors by a 6 to 3 vote during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday.

TENNIS: Redskins rout Spartans

LIMA — The Wapakoneta Redskins upped their record to 4-2 on the season with a 4-1 win over the Lima Senior Spartans in a non-league varsity boys tennis match Thursday in Lima.

Wapak players blanked their opponents in three of the four winning matches.

Redskins senior Nic Oen rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dylan Goodwin in first singles.

In second singles, senior Joey Jose posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Bryan Simpson.
