Junior ACME pounds Parkway after pelted by rain

CRESTVIEW — A rain delay failed to derail the Wapakoneta Redskins Junior ACME team from winning a pivotal game against the Parkway Panthers Junior ACME team in the opening round of the state tournament.

Needing a win to stay alive, the Redskins, now 14-6, jumped out to a 6-2 lead after five innings, before a 90-minute rain delay halted to play.

Experts advise people to take care with trees

Last Friday’s storm stirred memories of other devastating storms to hit the region — the Ice Storm of 2005, the Blizzard of 1978.

Chainsaws again could be heard throughout the county at many times during the day as people cleaned up trees that fell on their yards, homes, sheds and automobiles. However many trees, while the “wounds” may look fatal,  have an amazing ability to recover, experts say.

Lunch menu fees increasing

Students eating lunch provided by the Wapakoneta City Schools cafeteria will be paying more for those meals beginning next school year.

Prices for lunches at the elementary school are increasing by 5 cents to $2.40 for kindergarten through fourth-grade students for the 2012-13 school year.

There are to be no other meal price increases planned at this time.

“Pretty much every year from now on we can expect those prices to increase,” Wapakoneta City Schools Food Supervisor Lori McKean said.

Sheriff: Cruisers needed

With miles continuing to rack up, repairs costing more on older vehicles and with one cruiser taken out of the rotation after a recent crash, the Auglaize County sheriff is asking for another cruiser.

Sister Mary Alma Madigan, 100

July 5, 2012

Sister Mary Alma Madigan, 100, died June 25, 2012.
She was born to Destie (Riddle) and John Madigan.
Surviving are two siblings, Adrian Madigan and Raymond Madigan.
She was preceded in death by nine siblings, Mary Schweitzer, Helen Antonevich, Madonna Donough, Paul Madigan, John Madigan, Francis Madigan, Patrick Madigan, Joan Madigan and Rose Madigan.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 6:15 p.m. Monday at McAuley Convent, in Cincinnati. Burial was at St. Joseph (New) Cemetery on Tuesday. Friends called from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the convent.

Geary L. Wessel, 76

Geary L. Wessel, 76, 324 Greenville Road, St. Marys, died Monday, July 2, 2012, at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 24, 1936, in St. Marys, the son of Alfrieda (Quellhorst) and Earl “Heinie” Wessel. On Dec. 29, 1955, he married Betty Knapp, and she preceded him in death on July 5, 2002.
He is survived by two sons, Bryan Wessel, of Cridersville, and Bruce Wessel, of Delphos; and two daughters, Thressa Adams, of Elgin, and Laurie McDorman, of Mendon.

Vivian A. Koon, 83

Vivian A. Koon, 83 of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Columbus Grove, passed away at 6:42 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, at Richland Manor in Beaverdam.
She was born April 18, 1929, in Tiffin, the daughter of Lily E. (Griggs) and Arley Brown.
On Feb. 7, 1948, she married William H. Koon, who preceded her in death.
Surviving is a son, William H. Koon II, of Columbus Grove.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, in Lima.

Lisa A. Braun, 47

Lisa A. Braun, 47, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 6:40 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was born March 8, 1965, in Lima, the daughter of Carolyn K. (Cogswell) and Ralph I. Reed. Her father, Ralph, and step-mother, Marge, survive in Lima. Her mother, Carolyn Smith, survives in Elida. Her step-father, Jerry Smith, preceded her in death. On Dec. 25, 1991, she married Garry A. Braun, who survives in Wapakoneta.

Nancy L. Bailey, 72

July 5, 2012

Nancy L. Bailey, 72, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2012, in Wapakoneta Manor, where she resided for six years.
She was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Ruth E. McClintock and Harold J. Seitz, who are deceased. On July 21, 1962, she married Marion F. Bailey, who died April 19, 2004.
Mrs. Bailey was a 1956 graduate of Blume High School, in Wapakoneta, and a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. She went on to earn her master’s degree at Wright State University.
