Mending little hearts

A Wapakoneta family is again walking this year to raise money for the American Heart Association, specifically congenital heart defects.

Jessica and Dan Makuh’s two daughters, Abby and Lauren, are joining them in the Dayton Heart Walk on Saturday. It’s their second walk as a family and means even more as Lauren nine weeks ago underwent her third and final heart surgery in a series for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a condition with which the 3-year-old was born.

Street delayed

Barring any further delays, the reconstructed section of East Benton Street should be open to traffic by the end of October, a city official says.

On Wednesday, Wapakoneta Engineering Department Superintendent Mary Ruck updated Wapakoneta City Council Streets, Alleys and Sidewalks Committee members regarding on-going street and sidewalk projects this year. She discussed the final phases of the East Benton Street reconstruction project, the status of the Safe Routes to Schools sidewalk program and work on a bicycle route.

Tom T. Cartmell, 92, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at his residence.

Thomas Miller, 67

September 19, 2012

Thomas G. “Tom” Miller, 67, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:07 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was born March 25, 1945, in Lima, the son of Clara (Sager) and Henry M. Miller, who preceded him in death. On July 13, 1973, he married Susan H. Bogart, and she survives.

Doenges earns honor

ST. MARYS — With tears and moments of reflection and song, a county agency recognized the county’s top senior citizen Tuesday during its annual celebration.

Vernon Doenges was named the 2012 Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year during the Auglaize County Council on Aging’s annual celebration of National Senior Center Month.

Fall prompts fun farm

An area family has been spending months preparing for festivities that may become a fall family tradition.

Julie and Matthew Gossard, and their children, Mercedez, 13, and Caesar, 11, soon will be welcoming the community to their home during the grand opening of Furry Tail Farm Saturday.

Furry Tail Farm is a family attraction, that has everything from pumpkins and hay rides to a corn maze to a jumping pillow.

More vehicle thefts in city

Items have been reported stolen from two more vehicles left unlocked in Wapakoneta.

Wapakoneta Police Clerk Denise Kohler said more vehicles may have been entered, but people are not filing reports, especially if the thieves did not get away with anything and only ransacked the insides looking for items to steal.

“We are actively still working on this,” Kohler said. “We do have some people of interest.”

Randy Stettler, 60

September 18, 2012

Randy Stettler, 60, was reunited with his family in Heaven July 6, 2012.
He was born Feb. 18, 1952, to Phyllis (Fruch-ey) and Allen (Ted) Stettler, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 23, 1990, he married his best friend and soulmate, Mary Catherine Stuber who survives. They had an extraordinary 34 years together. Every day was an adventure.
They had a self-adopted daughter, Kama Hope Dunlap (John) Stokes, and their son, Trevor.
He had many aunts and an uncle and many cousins, who loved him. He had many, many good friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
