One of the oldest festivals in the area will celebrate its 121st year where they plan to sell their famous recipe soup along with bringing the community together to celebrate.
The Fryburg Homecoming Festival is set for this Sunday and includes raffles, games and, of course, their popular mock turtle soup.
“The mock turtle soup has been a tradition for years,” Fryburg Homecoming Festival co-organizer Connie Butcher said. “This is a special recipe that has been in Fryburg for a long time.”
It wasn’t that long ago that a Wapakoneta/Elida matchup was considered an afterthought in the Western Buckeye League picture.
Not this year. And not this weekend.
After years of being also-rans, Wapak and Elida are now contenders.
The Redskins and the Bulldogs will square off at 7:30 tomorrow night in what is probably the biggest game in Week 1 of the WBL season.
When the question is asked — ‘Can anyone challenge Kenton this year?’ — these are usually the first two names to enter the discussion.
And for good reason.
Gone are the days when Elida was the doormat of the WBL.
August 31st
Mary B. Gallimore, 88, formerly of 111 North Van St., and a resident of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community, died at 5:05 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at Otterbein Saint Marys.
She was born April 5, 1923, in Celina, the daughter of Anna (Snow) and Jacob Sholler. On Dec. 11, 1943, she married Rolland Gallimore and he preceded her in death on October 4, 1999.
Frederick Joseph Bush, 72, an Ohio native and current resident of Ruskin, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011.
He was born Nov. 20, 1938. His wife, Patricia, survives..
Also surviving are two brothers, Paul (Ann) Bush and David (Margo) Bush; three sisters-in-law, Cheryl (David) Wasmund, Barbara Perreault and Donna Williams; several nieces and nephews; a great nephew and several great nieces.
BOTKINS — Botkins village employees will pay more of their premium this year than in the past and the percentage of the premium is going to rise.
Botkins Village Council members voted Tuesday to raise village employee health cost to 10 percent of their premium and phased in future hikes.
To help overcome ever-increasing health costs, village employees now will pay a portion of their insurance costs.
The latest culprit in a lingering smell in the new Cridersville Elementary School seems to be an adhesive used on the carpet.
Last spring Wapakoneta City Schools administrators believed they had found the source of the odor, but by June they realized the smell was still there even after that potential cause had been fixed.
The odor first appeared in the elementary school on Reichelderfer Road in early April, when the building was evacuated for a day.
Eight area residents were arrested Tuesday, including a Wapakoneta man and a St. Marys mother and daughter, on a variety of drug charges as the result of an investigation conducted by the Auglaize/Mercer County Grand Lake Drug Task Force.
The arrests came Tuesday morning and afternoon as investigations continue into drug sales in the area and resulted in indictment warrants being returned by the Auglaize County grand jury.
Those arrested include:
• Joey L. Richardson, 30, of Wapakoneta, on six counts of trafficking in drugs involving suspected methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.
ELIDA — After being outshot, outplayed and outscored for 52 minutes, the Wapakoneta Redskins finally took their first shot on goal.
And Mallory McDevitt made it count.
McDevitt drove a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the corner of the net for an equalizing goal to give Wapak a 1-1 tie with the Elida Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League girls soccer match Tuesday night at Elida Middle School.
Elida controlled the first half of play, taking six shots on goal to none for the Redskins.
The Wapakoneta Daily News will be hosting an online College Football Experts Club through its Web site.
Local players will be able to see how they match up against a group of four experts.
There will be weekly local prizes to the top guessers as well as local cash final prizes.

A fee hike for filing an appeal regarding the city’s zoning code now rests with Wapakoneta City Council.
Unable to reach an agreement on a fee hike, Wapakoneta City Zoning Board of Appeals members agreed the issue would best be decided by city councilors. A notification change, from adjacent homeowners to those within 250 feet of the property, this year has increased costs to the city by as much as four times. Notifications are sent out regarding a filing for a variance or a non-conforming use.
