Barbara Ann Kowell, 72, of Chesterfield, died Wednesday at Community Hospital in Anderson after an extended illness.
She was born March 28, 1939, in Lima, the daughter of Eva May Neal and Orval Ambler.
The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity volleyball team held off a determined Bath Wildcats squad to post a 3-1 win in its home opener Thursday at Wapakoneta High School.
After cruising to wins in the first and second games, Wapak saw the third game slip away and had to scrap to come up with the match winner in the fourth game.
The Redskins had to battle from behind in almost every game.
“I knew Bath wasn’t going to come in here and roll over,” Wapak coach Keith Rambin said.
Bath opened the first game with an 11-5 lead and survived a Redskins rally to lead 22-19 late in the game.
BOTKINS — Coming off a victory at the Columbus Grove Invitational last Saturday, the Botkins Trojans girls cross country team is ranked 13th in the latest Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Division III state poll.
Botkins received 50 points in the poll, which was led by Minster in first and Coldwater in second.
The Trojans are back in action Saturday morning at 9 at Spencerville.

BATH TOWNSHIP — Connor Rockhold and Garrett Renner scored goals to lead the Wildcats past Wapak in a Western Buckeye League match on Thursday.
The distinctive Wapakoneta business’s light green truck is flipped over. The truck sits resting on a piece of metal at a 30-degree angle. Mangled metal stabs the ground and broken glass lies around the cab.
Approximately 25 firefighters and auxiliary firefighters with the Wapakoneta Fire Department quickly move around the truck determining the best location to place cribbing as a shift captain explains what needs to be done and giving them the reasons for its placement. Rain pelts the soaked ground, making the most stable of ground
even less reliable.
From sweet corn husked straight out of the field to tomatoes fresh from the vine, students in the Wapakoneta City Schools this year are eating local produce as part of their lunches.
Already this year, students at Wapakoneta Middle School and Wapakoneta High School have enjoyed sweet corn grown in a field by an FFA student. Slices of tomato grown by other FFA students in a community garden also are making their way onto sandwiches.
“We’re already discussing what we can do next year,” Wapakoneta City Schools Food Service Supervisor Lori McKean said.
Deputies and detectives from the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office along with CSX Railroad Police officers Thursday determined the likely cause of death of a CSX employee.
CSX employee Dennis A. Hemme, 59, of Cincinnati, died from injuries sustained when he was pinned between two rail cars as cars were being moved.

Rose M. Chiazza, 86, of Cridersville, died at 3:05 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Otterbein Nursing Home in Cridersville.
She was born Sept. 24, 1924, in California, Pa., to Rose (Masaresi) and Philip DiFilippo. On July 2, 1949, she married Samuel L. Chiazza, who died June 27, 2010.
Georgianna H. Knoch 83, of St. Johns, died at 12:39 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at Lima Memorial Health System Emergency Room.

Kathryn G. “Kathy” Welker, 58, of Wapakoneta, died peacefully at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at the St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima surrounded by her family.
She was born March 23, 1953, in Lima, the daughter of Emmagene (Keller) and William “Bill” Cool. Her mother, Emmagene Kennedy survives in Wapakoneta, and her father is deceased. On March 19, 1983, she married Thomas C. Welker, Sr., and he survives.
Kathryn G. “Kathy” Welker, 58, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
