Speech therapist, six teachers hired

A speech therapist and six new teachers were hired by the Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education this week.

Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner said the new hires fill in as-needed based on retirements and reassignments.

Whitney Fries is to serve as a speech therapist for the district. Details of her contract were not available. She takes the place of Deb Madden, who recently retired as a speech pathologist at Wapakoneta Elementary School after 38 years.

Rita Anthony, 57

Rita S. Anthony, 57, of Wapakoneta, died at 5:54 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health System.
She was born Oct. 24, 1954, in Lima, the daughter of Cicely (Cloude) and John R. Franz, who preceded her in death. On July 30, 1976, she married Bruce D. Anthony, and he survives.

St. Joe Festival’s focus is family and patriotism

It is that time of year where family and friends come together, celebrate the holiday and enjoy an annual festival.

The St. Joe Fourth of July Festival kicks off Tuesday and Wednesday at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds, and festival chairs are putting the final touches on the event.

“Our mission of the festival is family and patriotism,” St. Joe Festival Chair Mike Wurst said. “It’s a family-oriented event.”

The admission, parking and attendance drawings are free, and the event is open to the public.

Arrangements are incomplete at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Walter Vogel, 75

June 30, 2012

Walter C. Vogel, 75, 14455 County Road 66A, St. Marys, died at 4:14 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.
He was born Feb. 1, 1937, in Medina, to Lillian (Pritchard) and Edward Vogel. On June 20, 1959, in Kenton, he married Ann L. Oberlitner, who survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Peggy McMurry, of Galena.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eric Vogel.

Margene Graessle, 96

June 30, 2012

Margene E. Graessle, 96, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:45 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at Otterbein-Cridersville.
She was born May 22, 1916, in Buckland, the daughter of Carrie M. (Snyder) and Edgar R. Mertz, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 28, 1939, she married Frederick W. Graessle, and he died Dec. 16, 2003.

Financial woes: Auditor shares county fiscal concerns

Concerned with the financial picture portrayed of the county, the Auglaize County auditor met Thursday with the Auglaize County commissioners to discuss her budgeting worries.

“We always try to remain so positive about the county,” Auditor Janet Schuler said. “I like that, but things aren’t as rosy as they appear just because the sales tax is up.

“Sales tax numbers are good, but they have to be because the state is yanking money away from us,” she said.

Pit bull talks in C’ville

CRIDERSVILLE — Cridersville Village Council Safety Committee members discussed Thursday the possibility of adding legislation to continue to label pit bulls as potentially dangerous.

Cridersville Police Chief John Drake presented an ordinance from the city of St. Marys and recommended the village adopt a comparable ordinance to help protect the village.

Health education director retires

Twenty-seven years after she first began teaching the public about health-related topics, Auglaize County’s health education director says she is ready for something else.

Janet Bassitt didn’t intend to find herself in the health field after studying home economics education, but after three years doing such work with the Ohio State University Extension Agency and handling special litter and recycling projects in a 33-county area, funding for her position there expired and she applied at the Auglaize County Health Department.
