A new hit television show “Pan Am” on ABC prompted a local resident to reflect on her experiences as a stewardess in the late 1960s.
In 1968, Deborah VanTilburg, who was 19 at the time and stationed in Washington, D.C., started as a flight attendant and ticket agent for National Airlines. The Middletown native said she learned much in the two years she worked as a stewardess and said the new TV show gives a fair depiction of life during that erea.
Approximately 85 community residents turned out for a public meeting concerning the proposed 7.99-mill property levy that will be on the November ballot in an attempt to build a new school in Botkins.
While most attending seemed to support the proposed levy, many residents posed questions following a short presentation delivered by Botkins Local Schools Board of Education President Jack Buschur at the meeting.
BUCKLAND — Buckland Village Council members learned Tuesday of the resignation of auxiliary police officer Michael Blankenship.
Blankenship, of Port Jefferson, was arrested for inducing panic, vandalism, and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle after an incident in which charges were filed Sept. 29 in Shelby County. A warrant has been served on Blankenship on the charges but online records did not indicate if Blankenship had made an initial court appearance.
In another matter, a dog at a vacant home who persistently barks throughout the day may be resolved soon.
BOTKINS — During a home sporting event just short of a year ago, the Botkins community rallied around Becky Grillot to aid her in her battle with cancer.
On Tuesday, the community again rallied behind her one more time.
In honor of Grillot’s succumbing to the disease Oct. 5, the Botkins boy’s soccer team completely trampled Fairlawn, 9-0, in a game the team played in her memory.
Grillot served as a librarian and secretary at for the school district.
Two Wapakoneta Middle School teachers — one who chose technology, one who chose art — used grants from the Wapakoneta Area Community Foundation (WACF) to enhance the educational experience of their students.
Fifth-grade language arts teacher Kim Mullen used the $2,500 2010 Outstanding Educator grant to purchase a color printer, a digital camera, a photorgraph printer, a digital video camera and computer software for her classroom.
The Wapakoneta Redskins are heading into Friday night’s Western Buckeye League varsity football matchup at Van Wert with a full head of steam.
The Cougars, well, aren’t.
It’s 7-0 vs. 0-7.
Wapak is coming off convincing wins over Ottawa-Glandorf and rival St. Marys and seems to be getting stronger every game.
Van Wert, meanwhile, is in a downward spiral that has only worsened since a 28-18 loss to the previously winless Celina Bulldogs in Week 6. Last week the Cougars were blanked 46-0 by the Defiance Bulldogs.
NORWALK — Wapakoneta Redskins sophomore Shelby Kohler bowed out of the Division I district girls golf tournament held Wednesday at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk.
Kohler was the first girls golfer in school history to qualify for the district tournament.
St. Ursula and Ashland advanced to state in the team competition. And individuals from Perrysburg and Notre Dame punched their tickets to state by shooting 83 and 86.

Robert Charles Martin Tittle, 632 Grove Street, Celina, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 9, 1948, the son of Evelyn Lucretia (Franks) and Robert A. Tittle.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Tittle, of Celina, and David (Tina) Tittle of Elsmere, Ky.
Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Newport, Ky., with the Rev. Michael Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Foster, Ky.
Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Gale E. Miller, 65, of Lima, died at 5:15 p.m., Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at Cleveland Clinic.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 p.m. Friday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.
Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.
Judy Beagle, 66, 907 Columbia Street, St. Marys, died at 3:21 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at Lima Memorial Health System.
She was born Jan. 9, 1945, in Pruden, Tenn., to Mary (Adkins) and Elvin Orick. On July 14, 1980, in Jellico, Tenn., she married Adrian Clay Beagle, who survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Vera (Bill) Case of St. Marys.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mark Beagle and Michael Beagle.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
