Health budget OK’d: 2013 budget includes pay increase

Estimated resources and permanent appropriations for 2013 were approved Tuesday by Auglaize County Health Board members.

Auglaize County Health Commissioner Charlotte Parsons said the department’s overall budget of more than $1.8 million, plus more than $324,390 for Families and Children First, is a decrease of $100,000 from 2012.

“It’s a difference in grants,” Parsons said. “The general fund is about identical.”

Artist hosts class for locals

A profound artist will soon visit the area to teach about painting.

Steven Walker will lead the 2013 Painting Workshop at Botkins Local School, and this event will be open to the public.

“I’ve taken a class with Steven and can promise you’ll not only leave a better painter, but you’ll enjoy the learning,” Botkins High School art teacher Dan Knepper said.

Any artist is eligible to attend the workshop, as Walker specializes in helping all ability levels.

Health challenge kicks off

ST. MARYS — The latest edition of a local weight-loss challenge kicked off Tuesday night.

The Grand Lake Health Challenge began its orientation meeting at St. Marys Memorial High School. Wapakoneta Daily News Publisher Deb Zwez spoke first and introduced the rules of the challenge.

Robert Bowsher, 98

January 16, 2013

Robert Louis Bowsher, 98, died peacefully Dec. 29, 2012, at St. James Place.
He was born May 21, 1914 in Wapakoneta, the son of Louise (Fisher) and Francis Jacob Bowsher, who both preceded him in death. In 1940, he married his wife of 59 years, Gene Lois Troxel and she preceded him in death.

Jesse Daniels, 56

Projects slated for grants

Much of the remaining Homeland Security grant money is to be spent to continue with existing projects.

Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Troy Anderson said members of the Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) are working to determine how best to use the remaining money from the grants. They are expected to move forward with their options during their next meeting in March.

Park dugouts tabled

Replacing dugouts at Veterans Memorial Park is delayed at least a month as more information can be obtained from the city’s insurance company, but Wapakoneta’s recreation director does not want to wait too long because he would like them ready for the spring sports season in April.

During Monday’s Wapakoneta City Recreation Board meeting, Recreation Director Jack Hayzlett presented two estimates to replace dugouts on the two larger baseball diamonds, where one first base dugout and one third base dugout were destroyed during the June 29 windstorm.

Locals invited to help contribute to flood exhibit

The Auglaize County Historical Society staff is taking on a project of an event that dates back 100 years ago — and one that affected the whole state of Ohio.

The Historical Society is launching an effort to document the Flood of 1913 — which is known as the greatest natural disaster in Ohio history, according to Ohio History Central, a project of the Ohio Historical Society.
