The mayor of Wapakoneta intends to review rules for seating members on two commissions to expand the net from which to entice members as well as to take advantage of the expertise of individuals in the region.
Mayor Rodney Metz said he needs to fill one position each on two commissions — one on Wapakoneta City Waste Minimization Commission and one on the Wapakoneta City Tree Commission — but he wants to do some research before he submits names to serve.
A local school employee is retiring from a place where she not only spent her career, but where she also spent her high school years.
Diane Schlosser retired from her duties as a cafeteria monitor and food service employee from the Wapakoneta Middle School at the end of February, but she will still be coming back to the building as she continues her duties as the administrative assistant for the Wapakoneta Education Association (WEA).
The reigning spelling bee champion is gearing up for a regional competition this month, but in the meantime she has been studying.
Wapakoneta Middle School seventh-grader Loren Hire, who napped the top spot at the school’s annual spelling bee, moves on to compete in the regional contest on March 23 in Lima.
“The school gave me a spelling packet, and it tells of different origins of words,” Hire said of a list of words she has been studying to prepare for the competition.
Juanita Mae Holt, 89, of Wapakoneta, formerly of Fostoria, died Wednesday Feb. 27, 2013, at the Wapakoneta Manor with her family by her side.
She was born March 18, 1923 in Wayne, to Catherine (Milligan) and Carl Armstrong. On April 7, 1956, in Fostoria she married Melvin E. Holt, and he died on Nov. 9, 1996.
John F. âJackâ Kuffner, 84, of St. Marys, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at his residence.
He was born March 23, 1928, in Washington D.C., the son of Dr. Elizabeth (Yahl) and Fred Kuffner. On July 26, 1953, he married Alma Shaw, and she survives at the residence.
The Goodwill store in Wapakoneta officially opened its doors this week.
The Goodwill Easter Seals of Miami County had been working on the store opening since mid-2012.
District Manager Gene Motycka said the company was more than happy to locate in Wapakoneta, and that feedback has been extremely positive the first week.
“As you can see, it is a large store,” Motycka said. “We have a showroom that is about 6,700-square foot and a back room where we do processing that is about 4,200-square foot.
One young woman spent her 21st birthday — not celebrating with friends and family — in a hospital waiting on a heart transplant.
Botkins resident Rachel Doseck recently underwent a second heart transplant in January — and is now on the road to recovery.
Doseck had to be rushed to the Cleveland Clinic at the beginning of January after she became ill, and then she had to stay there more than a month after she received a heart transplant.
ST. MARYS — Local volunteer, attorney and community advocate Jack Kuffner died Thursday, leaving behind family, fellow parishoners, Kiwanis and colleagues with memories of the ways he impacted the community.
As a lawyer, local attorney Kraig Noble said that Kuffner was highly respected in the local law community. As an assistant prosecutor, prosecutor and judge in the county court, Noble said he had high standards.
“Everyone knew you could trust Jack’s word,” Noble said. “If he said he’d do something, he’d do it.”
Charles E. ‘Charley’ Webb, Sr., 80, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta.
He was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Wapakoneta, to Florence Freideger and Pearl Webb.
Surviving are a son, Charles E. ‘Charley’ Webb Jr. of Lima; a daughter, Annette Elaine Volz, of Toledo; five grandchildren; a brother, James (Shirley) Webb, of Wapakoneta; and three sisters, Edna (Glenn) Steed, of Wapakoneta, Mary (Jack) Selover, of Turlock, Claif., and Sharon (Dave) Erb, of Arlington.
Laura Bitzinger, 86, of Holland, formerly of Liberty Center, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Spring Meadows Extended Care.
Laura was born July 23, 1926, in Ridgeville Corners, to Clara (Hasemeier) and Henry Rosebrock. She met and married Paul Bitzinger, in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Dec. 21, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1971.
