Village groups create plans for Legacy Park

CRIDERSVILLE — With the help of the Cridersville Lions Club and Historical Society, the Village of Cridersville is working toward a new project.

In an effort to celebrate the heritage of the community and the importance of lifelong learning, Cridersville has developed plans for a new park, Legacy Park.

Judith A. “Judy” Snyder Voisin, 66, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Wapakoneta Manor. She was born Aug. 9, 1947, in Lima, the daughter of John T. and Catherine (Rausch) Snyder, who preceded her in death.

Buckland struggles with budget

BUCKLAND — Money concerns were on the minds of village councilors Tuesday, as a proposed levy and a tight budget were on the agenda.

At a previous council meeting, new line items were authorized to get better control of costs and expenditures.
Councilors discussed closure of the park to save money.

Mayor Dan Lambert noted that $9,000 was spent on the park last year and approximately $4,000 may have already been spent on it this year. The mayor noted he would not know that number for sure until next month’s meeting.

Carnival means fun

The rain held off for most of the day Wednesday giving the Wapakoneta Noon Optimist Club an ideal day for their first annual Carnival at the Wapakoneta WaterPark.

From noon to 7 p.m. yesterday patrons of the WaterPark were able to enjoy the luxuries of the pool while also having the chance to play games, win prizes and receive “goody bags”.

Bonnie Wurst, Noon Optimist Club member, said the event was aimed toward the children in the community and was an activity meant as a community service.

Derby racer’s work pays off

Even if she had not won third place in her division at the Lima Soap Box Derby last weekend, a local racer said it would still have been worth all of her effort over the past five years.

“At least you got to go out there and try to win,” Madison Kennedy, 12, of Wapakoneta, said. “It’s really fun just to go out there and spend time with other racers and other kids. The first thing we probably say to each other is ‘good luck.’”

Wapakoneta school meal prices rise

The Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education approved changes to the district’s lunch prices for the 2014-15 school year by a vote of 3-0 during a regular board meeting Tuesday evening.

The changes, which were proposed by WCS Food Service Supervisor Lori McKean, include a 10 cent increase for student lunches, a 30 cent decrease for those who qualify for reduced breakfast and a 25 cent increase for adult lunches.

Lunch prices will increase to $2.55 at the elementary school, $2.65 at the middle school and $2.75 at the high school.

Community unites for Relay For Life

Cancer fighters and survivors will unite for the Relay For Life of Auglaize County from 6 p.m. Friday to noon on Saturday at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.

This year’s Relay For Life, a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, will incorporate the theme “Game On to Fight Cancer,” Relay For Life specialist Sarah Burke said.  

The events will begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. with cancer fighters sharing their accomplishments and progress stories, followed by the Survivor Lap at 6:15 p.m.

The road to the silver screen

Internet search after Internet search led one local 15-year-old to a gig as an extra in an upcoming Hollywood comedy set to hit screens July 2.

Maddie Bayne, an incoming Wapakoneta High School sophomore, is interested in acting, and last May she had the opportunity to be an extra on the set of “Tammy,” a movie starring Melissa McCarthy, most famously known for her raunchy turn as Megan in Bridesmaids, and for playing Molly on CBS’ hit comedy “Mike and Molly,” and Susan Sarandon, a Hollywood mainstay.

Lois I. Stinebaugh, 82

Lois I. Stinebaugh, 82, of Springfield, died peacefully with her husband by her side on Monday, June 23, 2014, after a long illness.
