Vickie D. McCollum, 53, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:47 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Lima Memorial health System. She was born in Lima, the daughter of Carl and Barbara Jean (Newland) Martin. Her mother, Barbara Jean Norman, survives in Wapakoneta, and her father is deceased. She was married to Gary McCollum, and he is deceased.

Donald L. Mack, 84

Donald L. Mack, 84, of Wapakoneta, died at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at his residence. He was born Jan. 29, 1930, on the family farm near Buckland, to the late Carl Lavonne and Tessie Lola Reed Mack. He married JoAnn Thompson Jan. 4, 1953, and she survives.

Wapakoneta tops Minster in scrimmage

The Wapakoneta Redskins overcame a rocky start to their scrimmage Saturday but settled down to show some positive outcomes, as Wapakoneta topped the Minster Wildcats, 21-14, in three quarters of football.

Quarterbacks were not subject to live tackling in Friday’s scrimmage, as officials’ whistles often blew with the QBs sitting in the pocket or scrambling for yardage.

Kicks and punts were allowed but blocking and tackling on returns were not.

W-G gearing up for 2014 season

RAWSON — The 2013 season was a big disappointment for the Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football team.

The Tigers finished 2-8 overall and 2-4 in the Northwest Central Conference, however at Cory-Rawson High School on Friday, W-G showed improvement and talent along with some techniques that need some ironing out.

“Overall, we need to clean up our performance, but we are coming together nicely,” said Tigers coach Tyler Turner.

Third generation carries on tradition

For newly hired Wapakoneta Elementary School teacher Dylan Shepherd, teaching is a family affair.

The 22-year-old recent college graduate is the third member of his family to teach at Wapakoneta City Schools. The legacy began with his grandfather, Willard Heintz, Jr., who was a mathematics teacher at the high school beginning in 1975. His uncle, Darrell Heintz, is also a mathematics teacher who is celebrating his 30th year at the high school.

Absentee ballot applications going to all

If you voted in the 2010 or 2012 election don’t be alarmed when you get something in the mail from the Ohio Secretary of State.

According to a press release from Jon Husted, Ohio’s secretary of state, as part of an ongoing mission to ensure voting ease and cheating prevention in Ohio absentee ballot applications will be mailed to all Ohio voters. These applications will begin to arrive around Labor Day.

Redskins rout Bellefontaine in season opener

After being rained out for their first game of the season, the Wapakoneta Redskins’ boys varsity soccer team showed the crowd at Harmon Field Thursday night what they should be looking forward to for the 2014 season.

At least for one-half anyway, as the Redskins defeated nonconference foe Bellefontaine 7-1 in a season opening match.

Richard M. “Rick” McCormick, 56

Richard M. “Rick” McCormick, 56, of Wapakoneta, died at 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima. He was born July 10, 1958, in Lima, the son of Richard M. “Dick” and Jacqueline “Jackie” (Frost) McCormick. His parents survive in Wapakoneta.

Tragedy averted at WaterPark

A 4-year-old girl from northwestern Ohio nearly drowned Tuesday at the city’s WaterPark, but she and her family were back at the pool Thursday afternoon to thank those who saved her.

According to the Wapakoneta Fire Department, a young juvenile was transported to the hospital after a near drowning at 4:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the WaterPark, 106 Hamilton Road, Wapakoneta.
