Trainer dedicated to helping athletes

Growing up in Marion, Wapakoneta High School athletic trainer Emily Nielsen never knew such a position even existed until she went to college.

"In Marion there was not an athletic training presence at all," she said. "I had no idea what it even was."

As a high school athlete, Nielsen said area schools would rely on parents sitting in the stands who may have had a medical background to provide treatment for injured players.

Sudden Success

Worried he may have held the ball too long, Alex Lause was glad he did.

Lause tracked down possession of the ball in the corner, escaped the two initial defenders, worked around a third and afforded himself a workable angle to boot a left-footed shot into the net, giving the Wapakoneta Redskins a 3-2 sudden victory overtime win Thursday over the Elida Bulldogs at Ryan Field in Wapakoneta.

Franklin D. Melton, 80

Franklin D. Melton, 80, of Lima, died at 2:23 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born April 28, 1934, in Calumet City, Ill., to the late Lester and Virginia Shields Melton. He married Sylvia Buswell on March 8, 1956, in Nashua, N.H., and she survives in Lima.

Event aids downtown businesses

It was all about raising your paddles, dropping quarters and a chance for some great prizes Thursday as the Downtown Wapakoneta Partnership sponsored its “Spook”tabular quarter auction.

“This all goes to benefit the downtown building owners,” Judie Presar, president of the DWP, said before the auction started. “We try to raise funds to help them restore their buildings.”

Benefit to aid cancer victim

A benefit honoring Scott McEldowney, a Wapakoneta resident battling stage four pancreatic cancer, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Knights of Columbus, 614 N. Dixie Highway in Wapakoneta. 

The benefit is being hosted by McEldowney’s friends and family.

Brian Michael Stolzenburg, 29

Brian Michael Stolzenburg, 29, of Harrod, died at 3:23 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident at state Route 67 and state Route 235 in Hardin County.

He was born on March 26, 1985, in Bellefontaine, to Mark A. (Jackie) Stolzenburg and Linda L. Martin. His father survives in Harrod and his mother survives in Fort Recovery.

Ruby L. Shepherd Monsanto Kinninger, 91

Ruby L. Shepherd Monsanto Kinninger, 91, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:36 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at Auglaize Acres. She was born July 3, 1923, in Lima, the daughter of Samuel Elzy and Myrtle Ann (Maxwell) Shepherd, who preceded her in death. On Dec. 11, 1965, she married Bob Kinninger, Sr., and he died May 11, 1978.

Sister City groups say farewells

It was an evening of dinner, music, special gifts and presentations, magic, song and dance.

The Sister City delegation from Lengerich, Germany, said its farewells Wednesday night at a formal dinner and 20th anniversary ceremonies at Wapakoneta High School.

Following dinner, guests were invited into the Performing Arts Center, where they were first treated to a slideshow on the 20-year history of the relationship between the two cities.
