And the winner is ...

The greatest athletes of Wapakoneta gathered near the Auglaize River last night to race in one of the most grueling, challenging and surprising competitions any of them could imagine.

OK, maybe they weren’t the best athletes in the area, and maybe the race wasn’t the most grueling, but a group of about 85 people did come together and have some fun for a good cause with a large crowd cheering them on.

The bed races are one of the events that help to kick off the annual Summer Moon Festival, and this year’s wet, wild adventure did not disappoint.

Donald E. Whetstone, 77

July 17, 2014

Donald E. Whetstone, 77, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Wapakoneta Manor. He was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Lima, the son of Virgil and Mabel (Hines) Whetstone, who preceded him in death. On June 18, 1955, he married Rita G. Place, and she survives.  

Jon A. Brewer, 73

July 17, 2014

Jon A. Brewer, 73, of Tipp City, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at Upper Valley Medical Center following an illness. Jon was born Nov. 6, 1940, in Wapakoneta, son of the late Paul F. and Leona E. (Detjen) Brewer. 

He was a retired school teacher from the Vandalia Butler City Schools with 31 years of service. Jon was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he was past president of the council and a member of the call committee. He was also a member of the Southern Ohio Synod Council. 

Sara Foor crowned Queen

Self-expression, beauty and creative talents took the stage at the Miss Summer Moon Scholarship Pageant 2014, where the queen's crown and title was passed on to this year's pageant winner.

The crown for the 2014 Miss Summer Moon Scholarship pageant was awarded to Senior Sara Foor, 17, the daughter of Anita and Mike Foor.

New park is for the dogs

As far as the city’s concerned, we have a dog park.

Boy Scout Travis Rohrbach of Troop 14, whose Eagle Scout project was designed to delight Wapakoneta’s four-legged residents and their two-legged companions, said Tuesday that the park is “functionally complete.”

German students enjoy the sights

Although the German exchange students have been in the U.S. for a mere two days, they have not wasted any time before immersing themselves in American culture.

The Wapakoneta Sister Cities student visit 2014 began with a welcome picnic on Sunday and a trip to Cedar Point on Monday, leaving time to get familiar with Wapakoneta on Tuesday.

Chaperone Ulrike Schlamann said this is her first visit to Wapakoneta.

Board names choice for health chief

The Auglaize County Health Department announced the individual who will be named the new Auglaize County Health Commissioner after a regular board meeting Tuesday.

New Health Commissioner Oliver N. Fisher, M.S., R.S., is set to begin in mid-August, as current Health Commissioner Charlotte Parson’s final day is Friday, Aug. 29.

City council seeking committee members

Members of the Wapakoneta City Council are looking to appoint local residents to the Waste Minimization Committee for the purpose of developing and maintaining recycling standards in the city.

At the July 7 council meeting, At-Large Councilwoman Rachel Barber brought the issue up with council members, saying the committee “essentially went defunct” as the terms of former committee members expired.

“Nobody was re-appointed and there was no effort to revive it,” Barber said. “That’s why I brought it up.”

Edith C. Bell, 100

July 16, 2014

Edith C. Bell, 100, of Wapakoneta, died at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at The Gardens of Wapakoneta. She was born June 17, 1914, in Uniopolis, the daughter of Floyd and Emma (Focht) Gesler, who preceded her in death. On March 17, 1936, she married John W. Bell, and he died Sept. 7, 1994.
