Optimists hold craft show

The Noon Optimist Club of Wapakoneta held its 11th annual Arts & Craft Show on Saturday at Wapakoneta High School.

Noon Optimist Club member Bonnie Wurst said 90 percent of items available at the show were homemade and 10 percent were commercial items that vendors purchased.

At least 64 vendors signed up for the event. Vendors from all over Ohio and parts of Indiana traveled to Wapakoneta for the show.

Lura M. “Sue” Kantner, 96

Lura M. “Sue” Kantner, 96, of Wapakoneta, died at 9:50 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1918, in Anna, to J.W. and Emma (Zwiebel) Heiland, who preceded her in death.

On Nov. 13, 1937, she married Eugene “Gene” Kantner, and he passed away on Nov. 11, 1980.

WAYNESFIELD — All season, Waynesfield-Goshen's varsity coach Tyler Turner has said his team is capable of playing better, that they are just as good as opponents such as Mechanicsburg and Upper Scioto Valley. That their best football is ahead of them after losing to a winless Perry team. He was also confident in Friday's game against a talented Riverside team.

Trainer dedicated to helping athletes

Growing up in Marion, Wapakoneta High School athletic trainer Emily Nielsen never knew such a position even existed until she went to college.

"In Marion there was not an athletic training presence at all," she said. "I had no idea what it even was."

As a high school athlete, Nielsen said area schools would rely on parents sitting in the stands who may have had a medical background to provide treatment for injured players.

Sudden Success

Worried he may have held the ball too long, Alex Lause was glad he did.

Lause tracked down possession of the ball in the corner, escaped the two initial defenders, worked around a third and afforded himself a workable angle to boot a left-footed shot into the net, giving the Wapakoneta Redskins a 3-2 sudden victory overtime win Thursday over the Elida Bulldogs at Ryan Field in Wapakoneta.

Franklin D. Melton, 80

Franklin D. Melton, 80, of Lima, died at 2:23 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born April 28, 1934, in Calumet City, Ill., to the late Lester and Virginia Shields Melton. He married Sylvia Buswell on March 8, 1956, in Nashua, N.H., and she survives in Lima.

Event aids downtown businesses

It was all about raising your paddles, dropping quarters and a chance for some great prizes Thursday as the Downtown Wapakoneta Partnership sponsored its “Spook”tabular quarter auction.

“This all goes to benefit the downtown building owners,” Judie Presar, president of the DWP, said before the auction started. “We try to raise funds to help them restore their buildings.”

Neuhardt touts rural focus
