Principal suffers dog bite

April 23, 2014

A dog bite was reported on Wapakoneta Middle School grounds at 9:43 a.m. on Friday, April 18. 

Principal Wes Newland called the Wapakoneta Police Department advising he was bit in the ankle by a dog while he was riding his bicycle to school.

According to the report, Newland advised that he did not wish to file charges, only to find the dog’s owner. 

Max Benny Hunsicker, 79

April 23, 2014

Max Benny Hunsicker, 79, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:05 a.m., Monday, April 21, 2014, at Wapak Manor Nursing Home. He was born Oct. 17, 1934, to George and Lottie Prater Hunsicker; both parents preceded him in death. On June 12, 1954, he married Betty Pruitt, who preceded him in death on March 16, 2013. Mr. Hunsicker was a retired electronics repairman.

Elden L. “Red” Stolzenburg, 87

Elden L. “Red” Stolzenburg, 87, of St. Marys, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 9:44 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital emergency room, in St. Marys. He was born April 11, 1927, in Wapakoneta, the son of Henry and Alpha (Myers) Stolzenburg, who preceded him in death. On June 19, 1947, he married Mary Fogt, and she died Jan. 8, 2002. He later married Carol McDonald, and she survives.

Arbor Day tree ceremony

In a news story published in our Saturday, April 19 edition of the Daily News we reported that an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony will be held today at Auglaize Acres. It has been brought to our attention this event is actually on May 23 at 1:30 p.m. at Auglaize Acres.

Botkins rallies past Houston for league win

BOTKINS — Ending a streak of 11 straight scoreless innings, the Botkins Trojans scored twice in the fourth inning to cut into their 3-0 deficit and scored two more in the fifth to take the lead for good at 4-3.

The Trojans added three insurance runs in their final at-bat to land a 7-3 comeback win Monday over the Houston Wildcats in a Shelby County Athletic League contest at Botkins Community Park.

Nancy A. Koeper, 68

Nancy A. Koeper, 68, of 800 Bryarly Circle, Saint Marys, Ohio, died at 10:57 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Lima Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born Aug. 5, 1945, in Lima, the daughter of Melvin and Mildred (Thuman) Luedeke. She married Kenneth Koeper on Sept. 21, 1963, at Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ in New Bremen.

Doloros M. Diegel Katterhenry, 100

Doloros M. Diegel Katterhenry, 100, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 5:15 p.m., Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, at her residence with by her family by her side. She was born July 3, 1913, in Washington Township, Auglaize County, the daughter of Henry and Clara (May) Diegel, who preceded her in death. On June 12, 1938, she married Albert E. Katterhenry, and he died Sept. 2, 1972.

Owner turns trash to treasure

Take a look into your garbage or recycle bins — to most, empty glass bottles or an overused box-spring mattress might seem like junk, but one shop owner has made a living out of repurposing what others might throw away.

Michele Shicora, owner of Relics in downtown Wapakoneta, described repurposing as turning “trash to treasure.”

“Something that someone would think was junk and turning it into something funky and cool,” Shicora said.

Recycling is easy by the numbers

For Wapakoneta residents looking to participate in the city’s curbside recycling program, there are a few rules that need to be followed to insure that recyclable materials can be processed properly.

The first thing to remember is what can be placed in the red recycling bin and what cannot.

Green, brown and clear glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, steel or tin cans, No. 1 plastic containers and No. 2 plastic containers are all acceptable items that can be recycled.
