Sharon A. McCullough, 70

January 30, 2014

Sharon A. McCullough, 70, of Botkins, passed away peacefully at her residence at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014. She was born on Nov. 11, 1943, in Lima, to Lee F. and Anna E. (Kerr) Stump, who preceded her in death. On Jan. 20, 1978, she married Larry L. McCullough and he survives. 

Marie E. Zink, 98

Marie E. Zink, 98, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:40 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Wapakoneta Manor. She was born May 18, 1915, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Frank and Caroline (Fehringer) Zink, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two nieces, three nephews and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred “Bud” (Stella) Zink and Ray Zink, and a sister, Sister Frances Adelaide.

Vernon V. “Farmer” Westbay, 91

Vernon V. “Farmer” Westbay, 91, of Wapakoneta, formerly of Bellefontaine, died at 5:50 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Wapakoneta Manor. He was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Bridgeport, Ill., the son of Cloyd L. and Bessie (Saddler) Westbay, who preceded him in death. On June 6, 1942, he married LaVerta A. Hirschfeld, and she died March 5, 2006.

Wapak receives applicants for open football position

The deadline to apply for the open varsity head football coaching position at Wapakoneta High School expired Tuesday.

The school district received 48 applications for the position as of Tuesday after Doug Frye’s resignation less than three weeks ago.

Wapakoneta City Schools Athletic Director Brad Rex said the hiring committee met Wednesday night to discuss the applicants.

Disqualification costs Wapakoneta league title

The Wapakoneta Redskins had the requisite points for a Western Buckeye League girls swimming and diving title Wednesday but were disqualified after a relay race in which they took first place.

Wapakoneta’s 200-yard freestyle relay team finished with a time of 1 minute, 42.46 seconds, which was 33 hundredths of a second ahead of Celina’s quartet.

The event win would have given Wapakoneta 32 points instead of zero, while Celina would have taken 26 points for second in the race.

Redskin boys take 3rd place at league meet

A top-three finish is what the Wapakoneta Redskins wanted, and a third-place finish is what they got, while Redskins sophomore Charlie Sutton continued a record-breaking season Wednesday.

Wapakoneta placed third Wednesday in the boys Western Buckeye League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Defiance Area YMCA.

Sutton set a new WBL record in the 100-yard freestyle race and broke his own school record in the 200 free.

“I don’t think it gets much better than that,” Redskins coach Mark Law said.

Auglaize Acres welcomes new therapy manager

Auglaize Acres Nursing Home will see a few changes put in place over the next year, including community involvment and patient interaction, as a result of a new therapy program manager.

Matt Schultz, 27, said he was excited to start his position as therapy program manager on Jan. 21, and he already has a few goals in mind for the center.

Mustangs prove timeless

For residents of Northwest Ohio looking to share their passion for Ford Mustangs, there is a club for you.

The Fort Findlay Mustang Club, located in Findlay, Ohio, was started by Bryan Mersch and his former co-worker in September 2012.

“After I bought my first Mustang, I started to notice more and more Mustangs driving around Findlay,” Mersch said. “I thought it would be nice for all of us to get together and hang out.”

‘Y’ kicks off annual campaign

That is the theme of the 2014 Annual Support Campaign held for the Wapakoneta Family YMCA.

With testimonials from two fund recipients, and a campaign overview, the Y launched its annual campaign Wednesday morning.

Campaign chair Van Wright said he has been involved with the YMCA for 31 years, and was a part of the core group that got together to form the Y here in town in the late 90s.
