Astronaut, USAF officer to appear at Run to the Moon

Each year, the number of competitors for the Run to the Moon continues to grow and this year organizer Amy Kentner says she hopes to attract even more to the one-day event.

The Run to the Moon will maintain its space theme with songs playing on the course from a 2001 Space Odyssey, Star Wars and other movies as well as news clips from the 1969 Apollo XI liftoff and moon landing to attract runners.

Bradley reflects on Wapak boys hoops tenure

Matt Bradley couldn’t have done any worse with the Wapakoneta varsity boys basketball program when he took over as head coach. After all, the program had endured an 0-21 record the season before and was dealing with a losing streak of more than 30 games.

With a 13-10 record last season, Bradley and the Redskins achieved the program’s first winning season overall and in the Western Buckeye League since 2007.

Lease inked for park

A lease between Wapakoneta City Schools and the village of Cridersville for park land should be mutually beneficial, school and village administrators say.

Approximately 7 acres directly south of the new Cridersville Elementary School, on Reichelderfer Road, are being leased to the northern Auglaize County village for $1 for the length of the 99-year contract.

The property is to be used to develop into a nature park, with walking paths.

WCS funds to increase

Investments in school funding in the state’s biennial budget include increases for Wapakoneta City Schools.

In fiscal year 2014, the district is expected to gain an increase of 6.25 percent in state aid and an increase of 10.5 percent in fiscal year 2015, according to estimates from the state budget signed into law by Gov. John Kasich this week.

Switch proves right for retiring teacher

BOTKINS — Luanne Powell did not originally decide to go into the educational field when she began her post-high school education. Early on, she made the switch.

Now, 30 years later, the last kindergarten child saw the benefits of that decision.

Powell’s retirement became effective the end of the 2012-13 school year, after 25 years at Botkins. Prior to that, she taught four years in the Waynesfield-Goshen School  system and one year in the New Knoxville School system.

Patricia Pack, 54

July 5, 2013

Patricia Ann Pack, 54, of Wapakoneta, died at 7:52 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in St. Marys.
She was born Jan. 2, 1959, in Lima, the daughter of Myrtle (Adkins) and Raymond Pack, who preceded her in death.

Freedoms Colors honors veterans

A set of light tan boots, one laced up and the other missing its lace with desert sand underneath them, sit in front of a military rifle in a stand with a helmet on the butt. The symbol of a fallen warrior — in this case to honor Jon Michael Schoolcraft III.
His widow donated the items in his memory. Schoolcraft, of Cridersville, died in January 2008 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Festival fires up locals with fun, fireworks

ACME: Roughriders get revenge on Wapak in 12-4 win

MINSTER — It took four meetings for St. Marys to finally beat Wapakoneta this summer, but the wait was worthwhile.

St. Marys came back to record a 12-4 win Thursday over Wapakoneta in the losers bracket final, in the double-elimination Auglaize County ACME sectional baseball tournament, held at Hanover Street Park in Minster. With the win, St. Marys clinched a berth in the ACME district tournament which starts July 10.
