Wapak to take on Minster in final preseason test

The Wapakoneta Redskins are now preparing for their final test from an opponent before the regular season begins on Aug. 30. Wapak will face the Minster Wildcats of the Midwest Athletic Conference in a scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Harmon Field.

The Redskins concluded the two-a-days portion of their two-a-days schedule Tuesday.

Wapak varsity coach Doug Frye summarized his evaluated of the team’s two-a-days.

Garman throws another scoreless inning in start

Brian Garman started another game Wednesday for the Milwaukee Brewers’ rookie league team in Arizona, throwing the first inning in a 4-2 win for the AZL Brewers over the AZL Reds.

The Wapakoneta native made his first rehab assignment start Sunday after not pitching for nearly two months. Wednesday marked his second appearance in four days.

Garman, the Brewers’ 17th-round draft pick in 2010, allowed a leadoff double and then retired the next three batters, two on infield popouts, the other on a flyout to left field.

Wapak edges Shawnee by 5 strokes, 191-196

Able to avoid an afternoon storm in the area, the Wapakoneta Redskins focused on their match against the Shawnee Indians and came away with a 191-196 win Wednesday in varsity girls golf action at Oak’s Golf Club in Lima.

Wapak senior Shelby Kohler was Wednesday’s match medalist with a nine-hole score of 43.

“Shelby continues to be our steady leader,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said. “She is playing very consistently and being a great leader for us.”

Jean Walter, 89

Jean M. Walter, 89, of Wapakoneta, died at 9:54 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System, following a brief illness.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

A Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) soil scientist said soil conservation and health is currently the top priority for the government entity.
Steve Baker, who was the keynote speaker Tuesday at the Auglaize Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) annual meeting, election and banquet held at the Wapakoneta High School cafeteria, told the crowd that government entities and farmers and other workers in the agricultural industry are getting more serious about soil and water conservation, but the idea has been around for some time

Sewer update bids low

A bid for improvements to update five county-owned sewage treatment facilities came in lower than expected.

Virgil Knoch, 93

Virgil V. Knoch, 93, of Wapakoneta, died at 7:34 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Auglaize County, the son of Retha (Knoch) and George Smith, who preceded him in death. On May 6, 1967, he married Virginia Baumhekel Soder, and she died March 18, 2011.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie (Fred) Doseck, of Clearwater, Fla.; a granddaughter, Natalie (Ray) Overweg; and two great-grandchildren, Conner and Sydney.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Todd Doseck.

Wapak earns first ever victory against Kalida

Tuesday’s match proved to be a night of firsts for Wapakoneta.

For the first time in school history, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team saddled the Kalida Wildcats with a loss.

In his debut as the Redskins varsity boys soccer coach, Keith Rambin left Ryan Field on Tuesday with a win.

Zofkie wins county meet; Plaugher, boys place 2nd

Wapakoneta Redskins freshman Allie Zofkie won the girls race in the Auglaize County Invitational on Tuesday, as she had the winning time of 20 minutes, 23.48 seconds on the course at the new St. Marys High School. The Redskins’ Dylan Plaugher finished second with an time of 18:06.29.

The Wapakoneta boys team was second with 43 points Tuesday. Wapak’s girls team finished third with 53 points.
