Wapak blanks Cavs, 1-0, for 4th straight SO

For the fourth consecutive game, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls soccer team shut out the opposition.

They have been doing so behind a stingy defense and the goalkeeping of junior Mikayla Halfhill, but on Thursday, the Redskins needed that defensive effort more than ever as they only scored one goal in blanking the Coldwater Cavaliers, 1-0, at Ryan Field.

Wapak outlasts Kenton in 5 games

The Wapakoneta Redskins notched a win in their first Western Buckeye League match of the season Thursday in a 3-2 win over the Kenton Wildcats in varsity volleyball action in Kenton.

Wapak trailed in games won two separate times in Thursday’s match, as the game scores were 22-25, 25-8, 20-25, 25-18 and 15-6.

The win was Wapak’s third straight and gave the team a 3-1 overall record and a 1-0 WBL mark.

'Skins stop Shawnee on road, 174-182

The Wapakoneta Redskins rebounded from their lone Western Buckeye League loss with a 174-182 road win Thursday over WBL foe, the Shawnee Indians, in varsity boys golf play.

Wapak’s Bobby Crow was Thursday’s match medalist with a 40. Drew Wayman followed with a 42. Only those two players had previously played at the Shawnee Country Club.

Nick Bruns and Jared Miller each carded 46 to finish Wapak’s scoring. Alex Gossard (52) and Wesley Ruedebusch (53) also played for the Redskins.

Tigers record 1st win with victory over Ridgemont

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers recorded their first win Thursday in a three-game sweep of the Ridgemont Golden Gophers in a Northwest Central Conference varsity volleyball match.

The win was W-G’s first under new varsity coach Caitlin Klima and put the team’s season record at 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the NWCC.

“It’s exciting,” Klima said about the team’s first win. “The girls definitely deserved that.”

W-G will next play Saturday in a tri-match at Ada with Cory-Rawson.

Botkins handles Jackson Center, 181-198

The Botkins Trojans topped another Shelby County Athletic League opponent Thursday with a 181-198 win over the Jackson Center Tigers in varsity boys golf action.

Roger Miller paced Botkins with a 42 on Thursday, with Nick Okuley adding a 43.

Seth Hanna contributed a 47, and Josh Miller shot a 49.

Gavin Wildermuth was Jackson Center’s low scorer at 47.

Botkins improved to 6-1 overall with Thursday’s win.

The Trojans will play New Knoxville today for their next match.

LCC hands Botkins 1st loss of season, 6-0

In a matchup of unbeaten teams, the Botkins Trojans took their first loss of the season Thursday in a 6-0 defeat against the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds in a non-league varsity boys soccer game.

The loss dropped Botkins to 2-1-1, while LCC improved to 6-0-0.

The Trojans will resume their season Tuesday at Miami East.

The leaders of police and fire in Wapakoneta came in with simple requests Thursday during a Wapakoneta City Council committee meeting — one will require more work and more money and could require a new tax levy or the safety of city residents could be in jeopardy.
Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock would like video cameras installed at Veterans Memorial Park and the other parks to help combat crime, especially vandalism.

Lincoln exhibit kicks off with speaker

Locals took a trip back to the Civil War during a speech about Abraham Lincoln at St. Paul United Church of Christ after the opening reception of the Lincoln exhibit Thursday at the Auglaize County Public Library.

Julian C. Koenig, 92, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:55 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.
